Don't use an In-Home Dye or Do-It-Yourself Dye. Have a professional do it.

Why?
MY cousin is a pro and the cheap stuff doesnt work, a customer asked her to use it. Its not usually high quality, natural looking, at wasnt even the right color. Some people think if you use this stuff, chlorine and chemicals could turn it green...lol

Maybe just highlights/lowlights or something?
This. :glare:

I believe its dyeing?

If you have dark hair and plan to go lighter it's usually a good idea to bleach your hair. The only thing that really won't look normal is possible the match of your skin tone and new hair color, but other than that you won't have to worry about your hair looking too weird. Dying your hair a lot really dries it out and kills it so if you do it and plan to keep it then you should use conditioner aimed towards color protection.

But like others said, just go to a professional if you have any questions.
