I just saw a commercial for the new movie District 9. You can get more info on it here:

Recently, the sci-fi movies released have been about entertainment and special effects. I have no problem with that; in fact, I enjoy some of these movies. But District 9 is different. In this Sci-Fi, the aliens are innocent victims of "specieism", whereby the aliens are forced to live and work in horrible conditions and to endure despicable treatment merely because of their species.

The reason this is so "different" is because it explores the theme of prejudice. The South African film is based on a short film from the early 1990's, when apartheid was still in place there. My guess is that is the inspiration for such themes. What really gets me is how true this movie is. If you read the "comments" to the "posts" on mnuspreadslies.com, they seem eerily real. If this situation were real, I would expect to see the exact same comments posted by real people. And that scares me.

It scares me because this type of thinking exists in the real world. Think about the ideas many Americans hold about Mexican immigrants, or anyone from the entire Middle East. Think about how way too many people associate the extremist views of some (9/11, anyone?) with entire groups of people who may or may not hold those views.

Now, I know people are horrible by nature, but I hope this movie sheds some light on why this type of prejudice is stupid, egotistical, harmful, and above all, completely against everything people claim to be: "advanced", "enlightened", "intelligent", and "compassionate".

Any comments, on the movie or the themes?

-IMP ;) :)

If found, please report missing.

I watched the short film before looking at the trailer a couple of days ago (thanks to Binary Moon's RSS feed), and I was impressed with the story. I'm looking forward to the UK release of the movie.

There is a large similarity between the story and reality. Spending money where it isn't needed; focusing on foreign instead of domestic; any form of singling people out; not helping those in need; etc etc. I would likely need to view the entire movie to understand each of the similarities, but hopefully it will open peoples eyes; to what's around them at least.

Neil Blomkamp was originally supposed to direct the Halo movie. This looks good, though, can't wait for it.
