MyTopix and IF are solid, although, between those two, I'd have trouble deciding, but in the end you'd probably like phpBB more. As long as you don't mind spending a considerable amount of time installing mods and customizing it, because phpBB is some of the worst software at its default level. |

phpBB by far. I've used MyTopix, IF, IPB, VBulettin, and a bunch of others that I'd rather not remember. My experiences with leading forum software would have to be in favor of phpBB and IPB, along with IF if you want to go free. |

Personaly, i dont liek either, and i realy dont like PHPbb's way of doing stuff, i would go for IF in the end, beside, as soon as IF2.0 come out, you wont need IPB! |

SMF by miles. Even though it doesnt have much skins its very easy to intergrate with you website using SSI.php. Try both and see what you think. |

I don't have much experience outside of IF for creating forums. IMO I would go with phpbb, since out of the two thats the only one I have some what worked with. Also, I did a quick google search for free forums and found a free forum called "myBB"(link below). It has a similar appearence as vBulletin, and has a lot of the same features. myBB - http://www.mybboard.com/ |

Updated post lolz0r. phpBB is bad if you get it from a freephpbb.com site, but if installing via cpanel then it's OK. Very little ads. SMF is OK, and the default theme is quite nice, also no/little ads. I have seen a very big phpBB forum, and also an incredibly huge SMF one. I'd edge with SMF, but if you don't like, download the SMF-> phpBB converter and switch, without losing any info. YAY. |

MyBB is solid software. Good alternative for those who can't pay full price for vbulletin. MyBB has been facing some security issues though, for being so similar to vBulletin. On a side note, they are releasing MyBB Gold soon, and it is supposed to be great...not sure if these claims about Gold being great are true, but you might want to keep an eye on it just in case. And no, I don't recall them having any known security holes/flaws. But my memory seems to be worth jack squat these days, so maybe I'm wrong. |

I'd use phpBB, but it really depends. phpBB's interface is a lot better than SMF, but the source code isn't that good...However, SMF's ACP is horrible, very unorganized, and looks bad too...it's all text. I'd recommend phpBB, especially if you don't plan on modifing the source code. |
