It's official: James Cameron has surpassed his own record by making 'Avatar' the world's highest grossing film, besting the 'Titanic' $1.843 billion total from 1998. One fan laments the rise of 'Avatar' here: Inside Movies (There are also a couple of great video clips from Titanic in that article, including the "I'm Flying" scene) I was 8 years old when this movie came out and I clear-as-day remember the frenzy surrounding it. I had classmates who went to see it a number of times in theaters. And the Celine Dion song: perhaps the most memorable movie song of the decade. Technically, 'Titanic' still had more people see it (accounting for adjustments in ticket prices), but monetary totals have bumped that Oscar winning film from its perch. What do you think about this? Sad to see 'Titanic' fall? Is 'Avatar' good enough to claim that throne? |

Isn't very surprising to me. The hype for Avatar was immense (and the movie itself lived up to it). Seems like everyone that I know has seen it.. definitely deserved it. |

As much as I enjoyed Titanic back in the day - I'm glad a chic-flick is no longer number 1. Although, what's more impressive is that Avatar has only been out for 40 days or so. Whereas it took Titanic it's entire 9-month long run to achieve it's gross. |

I used to live in silence, I used to sleep in silence. Now all I hear is a marching of soldiers in my head.

I'm kind of bummed out about that as I LOVED the Titanic movie. Went to see it a numerous times and god knows how many times I watched it at home. Avatar was a great movie but I'm not sure I feel it deserves the spot it has. Then again, it was a monumental visual piece, so I can't be sure what to think. The great thing is that it took ANOTHER Cameron film to bump down Titanic, and that by itself is just mind blowing. |

I don't really care either way, but when looking back I totally remember when Titanic came out and I know I went to it twice (there was a boob!). Regarding Avatar, I haven't even seen it yet. I kind of want to, but I don't really think that it matches up with what Titanic was. I don't really know how to explain it, but it seems like Titanic was the bigger movie. Either way, James Cameron is a pretty smart guy when it comes to the movies he makes. I mean, those two movies combined are close to grossing $4 Billion. o_O Edited by Maiz, Jan 26 2010, 04:52 PM.

Sad to see it to be honest. Titanic is, and always will be, the best film I have ever watched.

Hmm, both massively over-rated films IMO. |

This article lists the top movies by ticket-sales. According to that, 'Avatar' is only ranked 26th on that list with 'Gone With the Wind' taking the top spot. |

Gone With The Wind has been re-released multiple times though - and stayed in Cinemas for four years during it's initial release. In today's market with DVDs, and even before that with VHS, it's not likely to happen again. |

Avatar was an incredible film and I have to agree with what Deletion has said, that it certainly deserves it. I'm not really a fan of the movie Titanic anyway to be honest.

This. And I don't care what films have earn the most money or get the most awards and whatnot. That doesn't mean a thing to me. |

I can't really judge because I've yet to see Avatar, and Titanic isn't my favorite movie of all time so it doesn't really matter much to me personally. It is interesting to see it knocked out of the top spot, though. |

I haven't seen Avatar yet so I can't compare the two movies. But I believe the fact that Avatar was released in 2D and 3D has helped account for the sales topping other films. Some people have reported going to see both versions. |

Titanic = Leonardo Decaprio propaganda Avatar = furry propaganda. Whoever wins, we lose? |
