I don't know. It wasn't my idea. ;)

Though we could theoretically get some of those lunatics who believe in wormholes a shuttle just to see what happens. :r
Assuming we could overcome the problems with actually getting to one, as detailed in my previous post.

Edit:
This was a reply to Screamscream. Should've quoted. Reid is a ninja. :P

Keep in mind that the space elevator would not be used to transport humans or anything like that (no, most definitely not, unless you have a death wish) so it's not an elevator in the sense that we know it. I think it is possible, but it will be interesting to try. As for its cost, it actually isn't quite as costly as one would think; doing rocket research is like 100x more expensive for NASA, so the good news is that it's an actual, tangible, attainable goal. Pretty neat stuff.
I'm just gonna come out and say it, I feel like a space elevator or anything like it would be extremely susceptible to terrorist attacks. Maybe I'm just being paranoid, but it seems to easy a target. And I don't even necessarily mean terrorists in the sense of everyone thinks of them right now, I just mean anyone with a demand would see it as something that would be easy to threaten.

The moon has never really appealed to me personally as a place for exploration. I'd much rather see NASA put resources into exploring Mars, or trying to send probes into further reaches of space.

I'm not sure how I would feel as a NASA astronaut flying in a shuttle funded by private industrialists. :S

However, I agree that the technology we are developing (or rather are not developing currently) needs to be the focus. We haven't made significant advances in decades.
