So this is gonna require a little explanation, mainly about the history of administrators. Simply put, we had two admins in the beginning. One, the root admin, never logs on. She basically was just there to help create the forum. The other is VJ, who hasn't logged on in months, and was a horrible site-leader. But one other admin noticed that the people who frequented were just a bunch of friends, so most of us were promoted so we could do stuff that we thought the site needed. We've not been very active, only having about eight or so members who actually post. Halfway through the site's activity, we got taken over. The root admin gave her password to a user called Altair, who promptly hacked the site before VJ made him stop. He did what you'd expect, he changed some names and avatars, not much else happened. Now, once again, we've been taken over by the same guy. (He's kind of a d-bag.) Really, it's getting annoying because... He's not very good. But when I called him on that, he changed my password and Email address so I couldn't log back on. (That's a real design flaw there. A disgruntled admin could completely remove someone from their account.) Now I'm posting with a joke account I made, and I'm really just kind of sick of it. I was wondering if there was anything that can be done about this. Basically, what I wanted to do was change the contact info for the root admin (she seriously hasn't logged on since the site's inception.) and ban his IP and all that. I know it sounds like I could be just trying to get back at the site, but just look at the moderating team. It's his two alts, our root, and VJ, who never logs on. The root admin hasn't posted a single topic, and has MAYBE forty posts in four years. I'm just bored of it, he's not really doing much of anything, and I want everything back together again. Thanks. EDIT: The root's name was Morgan Webb. EDIT: Oh, crap. I just realized I didn't link the forum. http://z11.invisionfree.com/SSBB_Freeboards/index.php? Edited by Mutough, Aug 25 2010, 04:45 PM.

Unfortunately, for security reasons, only the ROOT Administrator can resolve this situation. They must either attempt to recover their password themselves, or they must contact us directly regarding the problem. We are unable to offer assistance to other administrator accounts on the board. Sorry for the inconvenience. Jonathan |

I'm sorry, it's a security problem for you to give certain people who work with Invisionfree root access to the boards so they could fix problems the root admin can't, but it's perfectly fine for an admin to be able to change your email address and password so you can't log back on? Yes, since someone gave them the power to do that. If someone is promoted to administrator, or is able to access an administrator account, then that administrator can do whatever they have access to. The ROOT Administrator has total control over the board, but CANNOT be edited by any other administrator (They CANNOT have their email address or password changed by anyone but themselves). All other administrators are not covered by this security mechanism. I haven't personally come across a forum software that doesn't let administrators change the email and password of other admins of the same level. Jonathan |

That doesn't change the fact that it's a horrible idea. Well, now that half the board is gone, I guess I can thank the creators of InvisionFree for making some terrible decisions: *Allowing administrators to change your password and email on a whim so they can effectively lock you out of an account. *Lack of fail-safes in case someone takes over a board. *Lack of global administrators who can edit boards to help solve problems others can't. A four year stint of about 60 total active members, great friendships, all down the drain because some asshole is taking advantage of the fact that people made some &#^^ty decisions, including the creators of the software. I shouldn't be mad at you, but considering how much this community means to me, I am. Thanks |

If the root admin has willingly given her account credentials to someone else, that user becomes the owner of the board and, as such can do with it anything he/she likes. It is entirely the root admin's fault. |

Also, IPS created the software. Not us.
