SZ Official Community Debate #15 Topic: Effectiveness of the United Nations The United Nations (www.un.org) officially came into existence on October 24, 1945. The organization is the world's largest organization of countries created to promote world peace and cooperation. The United Nations was made to maintain peace around the world, develop and maintain good relations between countries, and promote cooperation and respect for human rights. They are responsible for starting such organizations as UNICEF and WHO, organizations that help maintain world peace and safety. Yet, they are often criticized for being the most corrupt establishment in human history, what is your opinion? |

If they were so strong on promoting world peace then the recent wars would have been non-existent. They seem corrupt to me. |

The problem with the UN's goal is that world peace will never happen, people will always argue, disagree, fight, and so on. I think it actually corrupts todays sociaty. |

Exactly, all minds think alike so there's obviously going to be disagreements. |

They voted against the war in Iraq. Bush chose not to listen to them. |

Couldn't agree more. What they are doing is not only consuming, but useless as well. |

World peace is only one of the many things on their agendas. And they don't mean it literally, like make everyone friends again. They mean to work to prevent and stop wars and global conflicts. |

The UN is not the most corrupt establishment in human history, because the UN has no real power. The less power an establishment has, the less corrupt it can be. Even though the UN doesn't really do anything, I like it. It at least allows countries the option to get together and talk peacefully, even if they don't pursure that option. |

The UN is great for charity. For politics? Ueh......not so great. UNICEF and WHO are very very good. I lived in Mexico and was poor, but many were poorer than me, in Mexico and other places. UNICEF and WHO are good to them. In Politics, UN is silly, useless. Political UN should fold, give money to World Health Organization, stop AIDS in Africa. |

agreed....the UN is worthless. Has no power, and should therefore be removed. |

Glitch was saying he was pro-UN, not against it. And I agree with Glitch. The UN has spawned organizations that have and will continue to save countless lives and prevent major damage from global disasters and conflicts. |

The UN does many great things, but it is mandatory that they will bw critisesed. If a country goes to war, no matter what reason they are in that war for, noble or not the reason, they will be critisised, it is human nature, no matter how many great things a leader does, he will always be critisised. The UN do many good things, but the media will twist things to make it seem as if what they do are corrupt. We should make sure we know the FACTS before we instigate an opinion of them, we should look at what they say, not JUST what they say, because granted, poloticians lie, when they do something bad, they cover it up, but dont be so easy to condemn them. The public of the world needs someone to blame for everything, they are polacticians, it is their responability to take the blame for problems within the world. as a political body, they are not that powerful, they have no absolute power, they are noble in their meaning, but they can't really change anything, as in an earlier post, they voted against the war in iraq, but Bush ignored them, they aren't really a major political influence in the world, granted, world peace will never happen, it is a human flaw, 6 billion people cannot always agree, but they can do their best to prevent war. That is my opinion. |

The UN may not have much power, but I believe it is a key factor preventing World War. Put it this way, political bodies from around the world, all sat in one room. Now if one of those political bodies begins to act rather aggressively, the UN will find out why and so all they can to prevent it. Not only that, haveing leaders from countries all in one room also begins to form political friendships and helps to abolish rumours (Don't forget this was a key fact that helped cause WW1). The fact that they don't have power means nothing, as long as they have a positive effect on the peoples minds, then they shall continue to stand, as that is is a key power that in the past, establishments just didn't have (French revoloution, anyone?). |

That is false, world war one started because the archduke of austria-hungary (franz ferdinand) was shot to death while visiting casualties in Serbia, which led to a chain of events, such as germany invading belgium to get past the hills and such. |
