 Hi, I am new to this... just joined minutes ago!
I used to be a graphic designer full time, 10 years ago; I used the very first Mac when it came out in the advertising industry 1988.
Now that I am retired, I have not kept up-to-date with the newest and greatest from Mac, I try to keep up with the Mac tech. But not using my software etc. like I used to when I was working full time.

I have OS v 10.5.8 should I upgrade to OS x lion? I recently gave my husband iPad for Xmas (not the iPad2... because it came out after Xmas! XD don't you hate that!)....

Should I upgrade OS v10.5.8 to Lion X, so that my laptop will equal to his iPad OS?

Will it be that easy to make the upgrade?

Or will I need to purchase new HD - I currently have the Intel Core Duo (not Duo2); requirements for Lion X is: Intel Core 2 Duo, Core i3, Core i5, Core i7, or Xeon processor to run Lion.
No, the Core Duo is the processor, not the HD. You need a new Mac if you want Lion. Also, I'm not sure Leopard will be able to upgrade due to the MAS requirement.

I'm getting Lion when I get a new Mac (have my eye on the 2011 Macbook Air) as I won't dare put this in my 4 year old Macbook.

Yeah, $30 isn't bad at all. Though, I'm with Nicolas - looking for a hard CD rather than just App Store.

New Features (If you're too lazy to navigate Pando's link above) :P

I think Mission Control, Launchpad, and Resume will be the best parts of this upgrade. Mission Control seems especially awesome. :)

I wasn't all that impressed when I first heard about it a few months ago, but there's a solid list of features that I'm excited for. And the fact that it's only going to cost $30 & I don't have to leave my house to get it is just awesome.

A friend shared with me a link to a guide that explains how to extract the CD image from the Lion Installer: http://www.eggfreckles.net/tech/burning-a-lion-boot-disc/

LaunchPad reminds me of the Classic Launcher back in Mac OS 9. I was wondering when they were going to add that back. I mean common, having all your app in the Dock isn't very efficient. (If you have a whole lot that is.) :P

OS X Lion was released today, is anyone getting it?

Also, apparently Apple is going to offer USB sticks with Lion in August for $70.

I really want to upgrade my HD before I upgrade the OS, so I think I will be doing that. Apple..forcing me to buy the HD faster than I wanted to :glare:

Apple is not forcing you :P Although before doing so, download Lion, click Show Package Contents on the installer, find InstallESD.dmg, copy it somewhere, then burn it to a 4+ GB Flash Drive using Disk Utility so that you'll be able to install it on a blank HD (at least that should be able to work).

Also, a question to those who've upgraded to SL/Lion from the previous OS using Time Machine and to a new Mac, what will happen to apps with new versions (such as iLife, the MAS, TextEdit, etc...)?

I'm at work with no WiFi, but when I get home I plan on updating.

EDIT: Just finished installing. The iPhone-like scrolling is the one thing that I'm struggling with. It'll be fun figuring it all out over the next few days.

The download took forever for me (~8 hours) and the Install took about 1 more, so I haven't had a chance to play with it yet (at work all day). The linen texture on the installation page was nasty. wtf apple? also i don't think i'm going to like launch pad. can someone explain to me how it's faster or better than just opening the finder? alfred or quicksilver are app launchers with actual speed and convenience. i think i'll stick with them.

edit: linear spaces only? WTF!
so, instead of having a 2x2 4 space layout, where i was never any more than one hotkey away from any other space, i now have to scroll through them like pages on my iphone, waiting for a pointless animation. great idea apple

I have begun using Lion, and I really like it. The graphite design to it is much better than the previous ones, I think. :) I've noticed a few things. Apple uses space backgrounds with the big-tooth animals series. Odd, right? :P

About the OS though - they got rid of the Macintosh HD area - where you could see your entire harddrive. I don't really like the new finder, though I'll get along with it. Also, Mission Control is ok. Replaced Expose, but I haven't really used it much. Launchpad seems pretty cool. Very iPhone like, but meh, it's decent. Facetime is also a little strange, for an OS program, but it works.

@Pando - Not sure about those. Right now, I have iCal and iChat on my computer. Granted, once I got the new HD, I installed it, installed 10.6.1, upgraded to 10.6.8, and upgraded to 10.7 now. I didn't really look into programs on the 10.6.x installs, but I didn't install the applications disk that came with the computer. I never really used iWorks, or w/e it was called, but I might just for fun.

@Maiz - Did you figure out the scrolling stuff? I hated the natural scrolling, so I switched back to the other one. I think a lot of people did that.

@TTO: I think the install took me around 2 hours total. 1 hr download, 30 minutes install. 30 minutes..for something haha. Launchpad just seems like it was ported from the iPhone, which I hate. It doesn't seem that much better than just clicking the applications folder and clicking on the app from there.

This also gave me some time to play around in the App Store. I hate it, personally. Not really liking where Apple is headed with this, though I still like the OS as a whole.

I just upgraded my white 13-inch Intel MacBook (late 2009 model) to Lion a few days ago and I like it. The lunchpad is pretty useful, Apple has done a nice job there. Took me about 1 hour to download it and about 1 hour to install it. The installation was also nicely done, I like the layout and look of it.

Mission Control is a cool feature, I use it a lot.

Overall, I think Lion is a good successor to Snow Leopard. The App Store is pretty nice, although I do wish they would allow more credit card choices in it...
