I thought it would be quite fun for us as a community of programmers to have a project that we can work on and enjoy together.

Does anyone have any ideas?

To get the discussion rolling here are some ideas:

  • A forum software
  • Another web based application e.g. CMS or a blog software
  • A php or Javascript framework

I might be willing to help. I have already coded a full php forum with a gallery to go along with it, I can show you it if you want but only in a PM. I just hope your not doing this project because you have no experience with PHP and you want other people to create your website.

I might be able to do something. I've developed for drupal (A CMS) (have an idea of some of the tables).
I have a lot of experience with SQL (including MySQL).

I've done php, HTML, and a bit of javascript.

Only thing I can't do is design a decent layout. I have no Photoshop skills so when it comes to that stuff ask someone else for designing, but my PHP skills are great.

I can photoshop a design, although I haven't ever actually done it before, I just know how to use photoshop.

And if this happens, how will it work? Someone going to set up a subversion server?

Hmm well, this idea is not great but it will work.
[class=codeteam]Advertising of other web hosts is prohibited by the board rules. Thank you for understanding. //EA[/class]
That [class=codeteam][having a subdomain][/class] just makes it confusing so what we would have to do is buy a domain for a
year which only costs like $20 maximum. I can code a lot of it, but I just don't want
there to be a admin more powerful sounding then the other administrators, I want all
admins to seem equal...

We don't need any sort of hosting. We could find some sort of site which offers a free SVN, or use pastebin or google code or something.

It's development, so there's no real point to pay for a web host, testing can be done locally. Even the DB can be local.

First thing is to decide what to do. Clearly define what is wanted, the scope, features, ect. From that we could come up with some diagrams, a database, and then it's just a matter of implementation, which will be the easiest part.

And it could be something offered to people to just install on a server. We wouldn't be making profit from it, so it would be useless to have a central server (such as zb).

But the fine details of code should be the last thing to be done. Principles, and stuff need to come first.

And if we're going to do this, we need a sound reason. Forum software? Sure, but why? All these things exist. If we're going to do this, we need to have something new to bring to the table. Something to in some way separate it from what exists currently. Forum software seems to be going to way of physical media, and moving on to social media. But on the other hand, forums have a special role that social media can't necessarily provide. We could make forum software that is modular, so users can add new features. Maybe a module could be, to browse twitter or something, and find trends in what people are saying. A section could be automatically populated with discussions from the social media.

For instance, say a forum were to have some sort of section for news, then discussion topics could be suggested. Something like that anyway.

So, let's discuss. The particular example I just gave would be quite difficult to implement, but could be perhaps an interesting experiment to try to develop it.

But yeah, this could be good for a resume, so... yeah, if I like the idea, I'm for sure on board with this. I have about 6 months of time before intense school starts up again that I can work.

So, let's do this, and decide what to do.

Just checked, there are some open source text mining tools available. So we could do something like that, but I imagine it would be quite difficult, and very prone to errors.

I think we should talk about this in a different place, maybe MSN or some chat client. And Fable must have forgot about this idea....

No one's done anything yet... ha...

I'm on the boat of I can help, but not on the boat of initializing it, because there's so many things on the go right now.
