I've just got myself a nice new lappy. One problem though. You know when you type your cursor is that little black line thingy? (if that makes sense) well what happens is it will jump to the line I just typed above so that all the words end up merging together, OR, sometimes it highlights and the whole sentence disapears. To get round this problem I've had to plug my old keyboard in and it doesn't do it any more. It's daft to be using a different keyboard when the lappy has it's own. Any idea why that would happen? I'm baffled. |

If found, please report missing.

Do you have a TouchPad? You may be rubbing your hand against it as you type, thus moving the cursor. ![]() There may be a setting for you to disable the pad whilst typing, depending upon your laptop. I know I can disable mine. |

Yes I do and I hate the damn thing. I plugged my mouse in instead. And before you ask, yes I did take the mouse out to see if it made any difference but it doesn't. I didn't think I was brushing my hand against the pad though. You can't really because it's flat. Dunno if you can disable it, I;'ll have to look. How would that make the text highlight and disappear though? |

I do it all the time. It doesn't really cause problems for me, though, other than moving the cursor around. One of the first things I did when I got my laptop is that I disabled tap-clicking, because I find it really annoying (in addition to the issue you're having). You know, the thing where when you just tap on the touchpad, it assumes you're clicking. It always seems to generate a lot of false positives for me (outside of when I'm trying to type ), so I disable it. There's no need anyway, since the two buttons below the touchpad work just fine and aren't in the way when I'm typing/whatever. ![]() That said, I also got a mouse eventually, and I use that when I have it with me (which is most of the time). |

Oh sweet Zarquon, yes! I don't know if there's some secret enclave of tap-clickers out there who are blackmailing laptop designers to continue enabling this by default, but it irks me so! "Did you just tap me? I think I'll signal a click event. Muwahaha." "AAARG MY WORK." "You tapped me." "Did not!" "Yes, yes you did. I liked it. Do it again." "..." |

You should have something that looks like this , on every laptop Ive owned (other then my current Asus one) you should be able to right click it and deselect "tap-to-click" On my Asus you need to right click "Property of smart pad" go to the ELAN tab choose options scroll to tapping and unselect tap to click.

I love tap-clicking, though. ![]() It confused me on this laptop when it wasn't enabled by default. Granted, the whole touchpad being a giant button was also confusing for me. |

What laptop do you have? Whatever manufacturer does not enable tap-clicking by default deserves my next purchase.

By the way, it's still doing it. I give up. It's not that important it just seems silly to be using a different keyboard when the lappy has one built in. *sigh* |

While I apologize for the extent to which we went off-topic, I would advise you not to limit yourself to asking for laptop technical support in an unofficial forum on this board. Google for people who have experienced similar problems, especially if they have the same model of laptop. If all else fails, call or email tech support--if it's a new laptop, it should have some kind of warranty. You are correct that not being able to use your keyboard is silly. What you describe sounds to me like almost certainly a software problem, but if the laptop itself is defective, you should be able to get it sorted out and repaired.
