I am attempting to get my website running using some sql server stuff and PHP as i am still new to PHP i know the basics but not everything so I have a couple questions... Do i have to put .php at the end of my page or can i leave it as a .htm or html... My site host does not have an integrated sql server like go daddy does, it supports php and sql but there is no online program for it... if i am running my sql server from my pc will i be able to access it using php on my site or is there something i have to do in between... thanks in advance |

A php file needs to end in .php, .php3 or .phtml. As to the second question, I'm not sure but I think so - although you'll need to do some config and maker sure you PC is online 24/7. |

All it will do is bog down that computer. Who do you host through? Because most host have mySQL servers (At least one) and phpMyAdmin. |

Well, you could, but depending on your internet specs and your pc specs, it could be extremely counterproductive. |

Number one recommendation... Get a book on PHP & MySQL, it can be paperback, an ebook or something but you will want/need one to learn how to use both PHP and MySQL for the kind of database applications you are wanting to write. Installing your own SQL server is not that difficult, most books include a chapter on how to do this. Or you could even use Uniform Server's SQL miniserver. Getting your personal SQL server to work with your php host, you'll just want to use a dynamic dns service like dyndns.org or yi.org for when your modem's IP address might change occasionally. (which I'm sure you probably already use one for the other servers running on your machine.)

Also, be careful with php. Php allows pretty much anything. Just remember that just because you -can- do something, doesn't mean you -should-
