Is it possible to make pictures with a transparent canvas in Photoshop or Fireworks? What I mean is, I take from Internet a pic with a white back, can I make it somehow transparent? |

In Photoshop, a white background (or any solid color background) is fairly simple to remove using the magic wand tool. First make sure you have duplicated the background layer and then hide it by clicking the "eye" in the layer pallette. Focus on your duplicated layer. Then with the magic wand tool (set at 40 tolerance should work, and with "add to selection" selected) click on the white area. Add additional white areas not selected the first time with additional clicks. Edit > Clear |

You can also do this in Gimp pretty easily - just click on the colour tab, then click colour to alpha (make sure white is selected in the script-fu that pops up). If it takes bits of your image away you can protect them with Gimp's wand thing too
