What is the minimum screen resolution you should support? 800x600 or 1024x768?

1024x768, in fact it's my primary resolution. No one really uses anything below that unless they're usually forced to.

1024x768

ZetaBoards has always seemed big to me. A size limit of 800x600 is crazy. There'd be so much that you couldn't do.

Also, according to W3schools, in January of 2011 0.6% of people had a resolution of 800x600 and 13.8% used 1024x768. ~85% used higher. It's too much trouble to try and please 0.6% of the total population of internet users lol.

Problem would be it isn't just the SCREEN resolution but people's BROWSER window resolution. Should be compensate for that?

I zoom in and out to see how it is rendered at lower resolutions. As for the exact resolution I don't have really know, although I should use Web Developer to resize the window to 1024px more XD

As for 800x600, that's tablet res.

800x600 is Windows 95/98 type of resolution. Most don't use that res at all, as far as I know. I usually design/code everything with 1024x768 in mind.

So all of you are saying we should put a min-width on the container so that 0.6% will need to scroll horizontally?

If anyone's that worried about resolution issues, they can always use a JS and CSS combination, for example:
Code:

<script type='text/javascript'>
if (screen.width === 1024) {
$('body').addClass('1024');
}
</script>
I think supporting 1024 resolution is fair even if the browser window is smaller, a lot of people minimize their browser so it doesn't fully stretch across the screen which can often cause errors that are really hard to fix because the window is being collapsed, there's often no foolproof fixes for these issues since it is deemed to happen if you keep decreasing the size of your browser window. It is unfair for developers to have to support this type of issue since the user is not using their full screen.

Think of it this way. if you align it center and the information they want is center within that center, they won't have to scroll anything.

The smaller you make the container, the longer the page. If they have to scroll vertically a ton, they may leave the page.

Another solution but rather tedious one would be an alternative CSS for that resolution but since all of you guys are for the 1024 width, I doubt any of you guys would do that hahaha :P
