If I buy a domain name from Google Apps can I host that domain name at DreamHost and build my website there?

You have it backward, a bit. You can buy your domain from a proper registrar, host your website at Dreamhost (or any host you choose), and set up your domain's DNS records so you can use Google Apps to manage your email, calendar, etc. That's what I've done.

Google is a domain registrar, Ben but I would agree with you and suggest buying it from somewhere else. That said, if Google floats your boat, that works too. They offer full DNS management.

As far as registrars are concerned, I love Moniker.

Ah. I wasn't aware they had entered that particular game yet. Thanks for the correction.

I agree. In particular, I don't like putting all my web services in the same basket: I buy my domain from one company and my hosting from another (and then I use Google Apps for my mail just because it rocks). If I have to ditch my host for some reason, I don't want my domains tied up in the separation.
