I am thinking about maybe making a theme over the summer, and I was wondering:

How do you decide what to make the graphics look like?
Where do you get the images from? Do you make them from scratch or do you use stock images?

I'll hopefully be able to get a better idea about how to do this, the more people say how they do it.

Make them from scratch... If you use other people's images, it sort of defeats the object, unless you're making a collab with someone. I just sort of did the style which was trending or whatever my Photoshop Brushes inspired me to do. Occasionally I'd do something with the pentool but not too often.

This article I just posted on getting inspiration for theme graphics might be helpful to you:
http://resources.zetaboards.com/topic/5120292/

The article I linked above addresses creating graphics for a completed theme. The principles apply here as well. To get started at the very beginning of theme creation, you need an inspiration. It could come from a color pallete, from an artistic image or a thematic idea. Once you have an inspiration, the creative process of making the images for it starts. Whe I first started, and before I got adept at creating images, I would find photos or other free-for-use graphics that I could change or manipulate to get the effects I was after. Sometimes working through interesting tutorials will inspire you with ideas for the graphics for your theme images, and launch you into creating your own effects.

I don't think there is anything wrong with using stocks and premade icons etc as long as you do something to make them your own and connect into the design of the theme.
