I think Crash-Cheetah's idea is very good. :)

Nicolas, I wasn't trying to oversimplify, nor imply that Brian didn't have enough on his plate. Forgive my ignorance, since I'm fairly new here, but I don't think it's bad that people are making suggestions that will help their boards.

If a board is temporarily inactive, surely that would mean it wasn't inactive beyond 6 months (which was the arbitrary number I was thinking in terms of a board being active or not -- but I'm fine with a year, as well). Either way, while I'm sure there are more pressing issues to be handled, I think it's great that members are able to submit suggestions that will help promote their own boards.

6 months wouldn't be bad. I was thinking that it would take less time if it was done yearly. It beats doing it twice a year. Although if it's done every 6 months it would be more accurate.

The thing is, all the active boards would generally be at the front of the directory, so it might not be necessary to do it every 6 months unless it's evident there's a lot of inactive boards popping up again. But as every board would be active when added back, I'd find it hard to believe a lot of them, particularly at the front of the directory, to be inactive within 6 months.

Still, Once a year wouldn't be bad. How many boards are create each day?

I agree with this, also. These boards don't need to be deleted, just removed from the directory. Then the owner of the board could later move the board back to the directory if they wish to still use it.

Not particuarly fair if someone builds a new forum IMHO, as a new forum would effectively appear in amongst the inactive forums until the staff could get enough members to make it an active forum and get it up the list, or pages of lists.

There seems to be some confusion.
IF/ZB does not now, nor (to my knowledge and foresight) will it ever delete boards for being inactive. It's just not a good idea at all. That's not what's being suggested or discussed here, and if it were - the argument would be futile and entirely ignored.

I think he was referring to these:

IMHO PHPBB have the right idea, zero activity in a forum for more than a month, the root admin gets a message saying the forum will be closed down in X amount of days unless it is used again.
Crash-Cheetah

A few members on my forum has pointed out that other forum systems send a warning by email to the admin that the board hasn't been active and the forum will be deleted in a month of the warning.

Twilight is upon me, and soon night must fall.

I'm in favor of removing inactive boards from the directory. I'm not necessarily in favor of notifying the admins as that, even automatic, can lead to lots of email bounceback (especially the first time)

As to those of you who've suggested Deleting boards:

We will not delete boards for inactivity. The email bounceback would not be fun for starters.

Second and more important, some of those boards though old, are still used. Example: My board is offline and inactive. It should (hopefully) be long buried in the directory. But I use it every so often for testing purposes as well as a reliable image host. But my board has had no new users and in some cases, no new posts for long, long periods of time. The same could be said for example about Theme and Skin boards that are made to serve as previews of a submitted theme/skin. ZNR is filled with links to old test boards whose creators have moved on long ago. So deleting by inactivity would absolutely throw those test boards in the cross hairs.

But we could remove all boards from the directory and in the ACP you guys cold notify admins. That will remove the inactive boards from the directory and those who are active in their ACP can re-add their board.

That seems a bit drastic to me.
