Dream Theater is literally all I've been able to think about for this past week, so I figured since there's no topic about their new album, I'd make one. I know there's a good amount of DT fans on the forum, so hopefully we get a good discussion going.

So what does everyone think about the new album? Is it a step in the right or wrong direction? Is it better than their past few or the weakest in some time? What do people think about the new drummer Mike Mangini?

Me personally, I think it's a step in the right direction, but after listening them for so long, it's hard not to compare it to albums like images and words, awake, and scenes from a memory and wish it had the same effect. It's still pretty awesome, but I can't help but be overly critical sometimes considering they made music that to this day gives me goosebumps no matter how many times I listened to it. I like the feel of the album, but it still feels like a blur to me, even after listening to it at least 7 times. Not many of the tracks really stand out to me, and this usually happens. That being said, there aren't really any songs I dislike, but for the talent the band has, I still think they can do a little more. It was only 5-6 years ago when Octavarium came out and if they could write a song like that, all I can ask is why not again?

Could never get into these guys. Just seemed like they were trying to hard for complexity than writing a good song. Also the keyboards put me off straight away. I like pianos but not keyboards..

Gah, I never got around to posting in here. It's clearly not their greatest endeavor, but I'm still a fan. I will agree that, at times, their songwriting is impeded by their technical skills, but they still have the ability to write great stuff. I'd love to see another concept album out of them. Even though it hurts to say, I think they're heading in the right direction now that Mike Mangini is a full-on member.

I actually am a fan of their technical stuff. Jordan Rudess is a very talented keyboardist, but some of the sounds he uses are too goofy to be taken seriously. I prefer just straight-up shred ala Vitalij Kuprij.
