discuss level of service? ok ryan, i closed a board on another balky zetaboard's server due to your response to a support ticket, in which you told me to stop submitting support tickets. this was a +3 year old board with well over 200K posts, the members drifted away cause they couldn't participate. how should i rate the level of service for that board? here i posted a tracert and s4 info. why? there are 2 other topics just below this one voicing s4 concerns, that's why. my topic is trashed, the others still stand. how should i rate that level of service? nowhere on this pirate theme do i find "server status" links. new feature discussion? sure, why not? the new features and bug fixes sound good, altho it would be better if we could consistently get to our boards to use them. perhaps some time in the future that will be so. and the ironic thing is i pay for this service, in cash not free trial offers. i serve ads to guests tho,,,and i get lots of guests, highest number online was 970. i expect this topic to be trashed and perhaps banned from the support forum, not a big deal, i've been kicked out of better places than this. thank you for your continued patience

Everyone understands your frustration about server 4 because they have been through the same process of having to check when it comes back on and sometimes loosing content because it went down while they were writing a message. It has been said that Brandon is doing all that he can to protect the server from ongoing DOS attacks; I recommend reading over this topic and the links. DOS attacks aren't something ZetaBoards alone suffers from, it's something every high-volume traffic site has been a victim of, there is very little that can be done to deter these attacks, otherwise the server would very rarely go down. All in all, it's suggested that you sit tight and remember that you're not alone and something is actually being done even if it doesn't feel like it. I suggest bookmarking the server status page and you can create a mailing list to email your active members telling them that the server is experiencing difficulties of brief periods of downtime and you hope to see them back soon. |

I too feel the same way you do about the server issues. I have a fairly active board that is becoming next to impossible to plan events on because it's becoming unreliable. However, making continuous and repetitive topics about it is not going to help. The fact is, there really isn't much anyone can do about DDOS attacks except slowly work on the server's security and immunity to those attacks. It is not Zetaboard's fault that some guy is always attacking servers. This can happen to anyone. Not to put myself out there, but I have assisted in DDOS attacks on websites hosted on better servers than Zetaboards. Again, there isn't much anyone can do about it except slowly start adding in security measures. I'm not sure how they build on these measures. There is a chance that they could be moving faster. But there is nothing anyone can do about it. |

This, and what we've done is create a Facebook page and encourage members to Like it, so we can post server status updates there as well. Since there's a time limit on sending out mass emails for non-ZB Premium boards, using a FB page can work well for server updates (as well as a good way to advertise your board and specific threads to members who are more active on FB than the forum). Yes, waiting sucks. Yes, it sucks even more when you are the owner/admin and you have to answer to members who might give up in frustration. But from my experience, as frustrating as the downtimes have been, they are NOTHING like I've experienced on other forums who used paid software. If you're going to be angry (understandable), be angry at the jerks who are attempting the DoS attacks. Yes, there are things the ZB staff could do to help keep us a bit better informed, perhaps, but there have already been excellent improvements in communication in the short time I've been here. |

We receive a large number of support tickets every single day. For this reason it is nearly impossible to memorize all of the issues that float through our lives here. If you feel that there is something left to discuss in a support ticket that I have previously marked as resolved, please submit a new inquiry that contains the ID number of the previous unresolved submission. As always, we'd like to thank everyone for their patience while Brandon continues to oil the machine. You have helped our staff stay calm and level-headed while we deal with the muck of DOS attacks. Really. Thank you.

A wee suggestion for when your board is down - set up a chat room. It's what I did, and now whenever the board goes down, we all head there. Just make sure everybody bookmarks it of course - cos they won't have access to the url on the board!

we've always had a back up board. Just sign up a new board and transfer all the coding over. |
