Could be possible to have similar permissions like phpBB has?![]() Especially possibility to "Edit" and "Vote". So, who can edit posts in given forum (Global Moderators and Admins always can Edit no matter of permissions; Forum Moderators only, if they can moderate given forum and their settings allow them to edit posts), and who can vote in polls (for example newest registered members cannot). Possibility to Delete and Poll create could be handy too. In given forum only selected people can delete their posts (even if their group permission disallow them) or create polls (if in given forum polls can be created). |

That's a very old screenshot of phpbb2 which is now obsolete in that support for it has been officially dropped - the Permissions on phpbb3 are in many ways more complicated but are similar to Zeta

I know how permissions in phpBB look like. The point is that I do not want permissions like "All", "Private" or "Admin" because indeed they are obsolete, and setting almost every forum as "Private" can be a pain (from the other side with hidden groups it gives much more customization than ZetaBoards has). What I want is just a possibility for allowing or disallowing Editing/deleting posts in given forums (in some forums Members can edit their own posts, and in some they cannot), and allowing or disallowing creating new polls and/or vote in them. Finally a setting that it is not visible on that screen - allowing or disallowing quoting posts. This would help forums with tutorials from being stolen. Someone may copy whole text but will not be able to copy post formatting. |

It sounds like a nice idea, but this would more than likely over complicate the forum settings page and for that reason I'm strongly against the idea. |

Nah, maybe it could make Admins life a little harder... but they do not need to use this if they do not want. Advanced features are for advanced Admins. Other, who do not really know how to administrate their board, always can set that everyone can edit own posts and vote in polls. |

What are the practical applications? Edit and Vote are both controlled in group settings. So either we'd have to remove them or would you want permission overrides to trump group settings? It seems like a change that would essentially add very little since the features already exist. It just means more individual control over group control? |

Good grief that takes me back. I loved phpBB2. It was so easy. I HATE phpBB3 with a passion. The permissions are just SO complicated! Drives me insane. IF and Zeta are MUCH simpler. I think the permissions as they are are fine. |

Hello Stephen! Nice to meet You here! ![]() Yes, the main problem is that both "Edit" and "Vote" are only group controlled. It is a pain for many contests, because if I do not want to have "ghost votes", so cheating, I must hide the whole forum with polls from newest users sight, or disable their voting ability therefore they will not be able to vote in polls in my WHOLE board. Not to mention that if I will hide the forum with polls, so newest users will not be able to see the polls, and therefore to vote in polls, I will not get any commentary from them. So either: - they will be able to see polls, and then vote in them, and post reply to topics - they will not be able to see polls, so vote in them, but unfortunately also post a reply to topics - they will be able to see polls, but not vote in any single poll in my whole board, and reply to topic. I have no idea what is a worstest scenario now.. Also, I must create a whole new usergroup for newest members, if I will want to block their voting abilities. With Personal mask I would solve this problem without needing to create a new group. Therefore the best option would be a "permission that overrides to trump group setting". I am not saying that group setting is bad, it is just not enough. === Same for possibility to Edit. Either I will remove the whole possibility to edit posts, or I will leave it as it is. But in my board in certain places I would want to disable editing. For example in my tutorial forums. Once posted tutorial cannot be edited, and therefore removed. In contests also this feature is handy, because it prevents from cheating. Finally there can be some users that I do not want let them to edit their posts, but also I do not want to create a whole new usergroup. You know... I do not want to make my "View who's online" a rainbow with a lot of different colours. If I could hide certain groups from online list, I would consider creating second, or third "Members" group with different permissions. But I cannot. === Generally I think that most of permissions should be "Access Mask" controlled, not just group controlled. The reason is very simple. If let's say I want to give one SINGLE Member from my board an ability to post in locked topics, I must create a whole 0ne-member-only usergroup for him, and move him there. It is not possible to give one single member of mine possibility to post in locked topics without showing this to all other my members. ===== @SugarCandy: Yes, phpBB2 is great. My Talisman board, and my publisher's board are hosted by phpBB2, and I must say that I like a lot of phpBB features, and I really would want to see them in ZetaBoards. |
