Skyrim is a whole different storyline than Oblivion - with a few crossovers here and there.

Yes this is most definitely true. I'm leaning more towards joining the Imperials because my brother is joining the Stormcloaks and part of it is that I want to see the difference between the two.

I joined the Imperials. I made it to the Stormcloak hold and talked to their leader who tried to recruit me (strange, being that I'm a high elf mage, but OK.) Then I talked to some people in the town, namely a general/war hero from their "great war" against the elves who said most people welcome the other races and stuff. And how he was upset because he thought the war before was supposed to be for the empire, but now it just seems like it was to set up for the stormcloak's uprising. And I was like "wow. if that's the history, I have to side with the empire." Now, I did hesitate a bit because I met some high elves who were complete butt-faces when I talked to them. And the imperials have some freedom-of-religion work to do. But I figured they're the lesser of two evils. They're for unity, even if they're not all the way there yet. |

It also makes you wonder: if the Imperials couldn't stand up to the Dominion and were forced to sign the White-Gold Concordat or whatever, then what chance would the Stormcloaks have against them when they attempt to rid themselves of the treaty? Or are the Dominion long gone now?

My brother and I have been trying to figure out the leveling - I heard something about 50, and then you stop gaining level perks and then you max out at 75. What's the actual leveling process?

When everything is 100 you're level 81 and a half. I've seen videos though where people are like 100 and something though, but that has to bug modded. You still get perks up to 81 according to someone I work with who glitched up to it. I found that once I hit 50 it seems to take forever to go up. xD I've pretty much maxed out everything I use. It's really nice being able to make a bow with like 150 base damage and around 140 in magical damage.

So I was tired of seeing the "Innocence Lost" quest for me. So I killed the lady (which I really didn't want to do). Then I got the "We Know." note. So I researched what's coming next, and I think my guy's never going to sleep again. xD I don't think I'm a high enough level to take on the brotherhood yet, and I can't imagine my character joining them, but I hear if I do manage to kill the brotherhood guy you get tonnes of stuff during the "destroy the brotherhood!" quest but can't get any of the brotherhood quests/rewards/trophies. The brotherhood is pathetically easy to kill. If you have the quest 'Destroy the Brotherhood!' then all of the members are placed in separate rooms in the sanctuary, which means you can fight them all one-on-one. In my case, I stealth-killed all of them (100 sneak does wonders, I dare say). Astrid, on the other hand, is more of a tough cookie to kill one-on-one. But still very doable because she takes like 20 minutes to get down from the place she's sitting when you originally attack her. However, you are correct: you will miss out on the (sometimes epic) rewards from the Dark Brotherhood questline. Then again, you get a massive influx of both gold and items from destroying them. So. Up to you. I've completed the dark brotherhood on two characters now and destroyed them on one, and I honestly don't see one as superior than the other. The dark brotherhood questline is nowhere near as fun as it was in Oblivion, so don't think you're missing out on some awesome questline. I'm also a level 81 fellow. If you make all fortify smithing gear and some fortify smithing potions, you can improve weapons/armor to a ridiculous degree. For example, I have well over 1000 armor rating with glass armor and my chillrend does 350 base damage. If you don't have chillrend, I think the daedric sword does somewhere around 340 damage when smithed up to legendary. That is with all +% one-handed damage enchants, by the way. Also, if you do this, you will have to play on Master to make the game even moderately challenging. But it's still epic, all the same. The Dominion is alive and well, or else the White-Gold Concordat would not be in effect still. In fact, the concordat was the empire's way of surviving the great war. But the Stormcloaks do not want to rule the empire: they simply want to return Skyrim to the rule of the Nords (cast out the Empire, so to speak). Whoever loses the empire vs stormcloak war will probably be targeted by the Dominion, though. But I think the idea then is that the Dominion will be weakened if it goes to war with either side, in which case the empire and stormcloaks would probably unite and attack the Dominion. That's just speculation, though. The empire doesn't like the concordat as much as anyone else. Edited by Reid-ZNS, Dec 8 2011, 11:04 PM.

I'm in the middle of the Dark Brotherhood as we speak, actually. I saved them for last (as well as my evil Daedric missions). Dark Brotherhood isn't something I would normally do, but I wanted to go for the most complete and time-consuming (in addition to the already countless hours I've spent wandering around, accomplishing virtually nothing) game experience possible. I didn't even realize there was an option to kill them, but I did think about what might happen if I attacked the girl in the house rather than one of the tied up people. It was funny when I was heading out to Dawnstar to do a contract hit - a dragon appeared and ended up killing the person for me. ![]() Does anyone else find a strange psychological compulsion to appease the Daedra lords regardless of what they request, or is that just me? Now, I never wanted to kill a Priest of Arkay and eat him or lure a friend to be sacrificed on a poll, but somehow a disembodied talking voice convinced me all the same. It's like the video game equivalent to the Milgram experiment.

Oh yes. You could kill Lucien Lachance in Oblivion, too, when he tried to recruit you for the dark brotherhood. That fight was also interesting. I should note that if you are just following the dark brotherhood questline stuff, you're not actually completing it, so to speak: there are "side contracts" that you can do in the meantime. As soon as you start doing quests for Astrid is when the side contracts appear, I believe. (My knowledge of Skyrim isn't as extensive as my knowledge of Oblivion. )The daedra lords are awesome. I don't know if you played Oblivion, but the expansion The Shivering Isles was probably among my favorite questlines in any game, ever. It was just epic in all forms and fashions. Also, the daedra lords seem to be the only people who operate with impunity in Tamriel. None of the Eight and One ever do anything that directly affects anyone (with the exception of the Knights of the Nine questline in Oblivion, but even then you were a 'champion' and did not speak to any of them directly), none of the Jarls do anything special, none of the Greybeards ever pwn anyone, the dragons you are always killing, Alduin only appears at scripted moments, and so on. The series is very generous with respect to the daedra lords. They're pretty much the most powerful beings in all of the lore. It took both Sotha Sil and Almalexia to banish Mehrunes Dagon, for instance. Also, none of the daedra ever 'die'; they're just banished, whereupon they're reincarnated. Also, Akatosh (the 'King' of the Nine Divines) took on Mehrunes Dagon in single combat and was only able to banish him. (How easily is debatable...) So, the daedric lords seem to be just as powerful as the aedra. I love TES lore. |

I'll have to play it all again, I haven't played oblivion in a long time so I've forgotten much of the story itself lol.
