I can see how to password protecting certain threads in a section, but what I'd like to know is if there is a way of password protecting a whole category. I've just been wandering around the ACP and I can't seem to find anything obvious in there. Is there a way of password protecting a category, and if so, how do I set it up?... TIA |

As far as I'm aware it isn't possible to password protect an entire category all at once. But you could just use the same password for each section.

It shouldn't be too much of a nuisance. I could see why it might be thought it would be on InvisionFree, when you had to consistently re-enter forum passwords. However, on ZetaBoards once it's entered once an access list remembers which accounts had access to the forum and no longer requires those accounts to enter the password, unless the access list is reset via the ACP. |

I have about 9 or 10 different categories in the section, so I thought it'd be easier all round if a password was entered once for the whole section rather than for every category in that section. also if members don't save the password to their browser, they have to re enter the password several times again... |

Actually, they don't. ZetaBoards forums save who was entered the password based on username, not by browser session like IF. So, you'll only ever have to enter it once and then you're golden. ![]() ~ Zachie |

firefox logs both the friends that use it and myself out of everything when we clear everything from it, so it would mean logging into the forum then every category in the pasworded section again... |

You don't understand. The forum itself saves it, so even if you log out, clear your entire browser history, passwords, and everything, it still registers as you having put in the password. Like Nicolas says, the only way you'll have to re-input the password, is if the access list is reset. Edited by Zachie, Jan 7 2012, 03:56 AM.

SandyC, Please try to understand that the log-in session and the password protection of forums are two separate functions altogether. If you create a password-protected forum section, enter that password, then log out of your board when you log back in you will not have to re-enter the password to view the password protected forum. This is different from how it worked on InvisionFree. ZetaBoards internally stores which accounts have entered the specific forum passwords to which sections so that if you're logged in as one such account you do not have to re-enter the forum's password. (Unless the access-list has been cleared via the Admin CP.) As it is an inner working of the software it has nothing whatsoever to do with your browser. You can quite simply test this feature on your own, if you're still not sure. Just create a password protected forum, enter the password, and log out of your account. Log back in and note that you do not have to reenter the password protected forum's password. In fact, it won't even display the lock icon to indicate the forum was ever password protected. For your account, it will just be another forum. |

I think it's you folk that don't understand, I get logged out, irrespective of how the passwords stored or whatever, you can keep telling me that until the cows come home, but it won't change the facts eh... |

But that's not the topic, is it? That doesn't affect passwords, so I don't know why it would be a problem. |

Account passwords and passwords to individual forums are different. Accounts will get logged out based on browser and cookie settings. Access to forums (when logged in to the board) will not be revoked based on browser settings. It's that simple. |

We seem to be running round in circles here and all it's achieving is putting my blood pressure up because I hate repeating myself... maybe, just maybe there's a bug in the zeta software seeing as this happens to several of us on a couple of forums. |

You have been told a password protected Category is not possible unless you password protect each forum/section within it separately (and you can use the same password). That answers your original support question in whole. You have also been told that sections within a board remember account level access to them regardless of browser settings. This is a fact of the software. You were only informed of this so as to make clear that password protected forums are not a hassle. It is not possible to password protect individual "threads" as your original post suggests, as a "thread" is also known as a "topic". It's where you're reading this post now. A collection of posts viewed on a page is a thread or topic. ZetaBoards does not allow individual topics to be password protected. That said, I have sent you a personal message with login credentials to a test board and instructions on duplicating this process so you can see and have first hand experience with it. This topic has been resolved, given the parameters of your first post. |
