There's no real way to avoid that - People use Proxy Servers to disguise where they are browsing from and to circumvent any bans that might be put in place by an isp For example I cannot get to many forums when browsing in the local library as they are banned but can if I got through a proxy server (There are plenty of free proxy services available) this bypasses the bans. This will give you more info http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Proxy_server |

John firstly are all registrations on your board admin and email approval? If not they should be, that way no one can get into your board unless you activate them. Secondly it might help to put a notice in your site rules about people using proxy servers. State that they are not allowed and anyone using one to try and register will have their registration denied. Secondly make sure you use an IP checking site so you can see if the person is using a proxy or not. I use this, as it identifies many proxy IP's. www.whatismyipaddress.com. Now say for example the person tries to register using a proxy and the IP is: 123.456.78.90. You ban it and they try again, but this time the IP is: 123.456.67.87. You'll see the first 2 sets of numbers are the same, only the last 2 sets change. So what you need to do is *wildcard* it. So you do this: 123.456.*.* and that will ban the entire range of that particular proxy IP so no one will be able to use it. I do all this on my site and it works a treat. You have to make life as difficult as you can for these trouble makers to get onto your site. It also helps if you ban the email they uses as well. That way they have to go through all the trouble of making another one. Also make a rule about not using mobile phones to register, that way they HAVE to use their ISP. Hope this helps.
