How about starting with a theme from the base gallery and modifying it with the help of a developer tool like FireBug? (Chrome has a built in one.)

Using the developer tool to identify the elements will get you back into the feel of working with the CSS.

Maybe start with picking a color pallete, apply it to the base theme major background areas and then go from there.

could you explain firebug? and I'd rather design my own theme. Even if it's bad, I just like knowing I created something from start to finish.

Firebug is a coding tool of the web that is recommended if you are a coder of the web. It's great for ZetaBoards coding because it shows you the HTML and CSS source and allows you to modify it in just about anyway. You can add HTML, CSS or run JavaScript as well. I use it almost every hour of the day that I'm on the computer. It's particularly good for theme coders so you can easily determine what class or ID controls what.

You start with something by cloning the ZB default anyway yes? I don't see a lot of difference, other than you could learn a few different techniques from some of the base themes.

FireBug is a FireFox extension. Its a tool that identifies where an element is in the CSS or other coding and allows you to edit it right on the page so you can see what your changes will look like. It also identifies the IDs and classes of elements which is really helpful in writing additional code.

There are other developer tool extensions available from FireFox as well.

You could follow along with the theme guide and supplement with your own images/design. ^_^ You can always ask for assistance if you run into trouble as well.

A YouTube video will do the trick, just search for the basic designing tips in it.
