Optimizing your web site by compressing (read eliminating) unneeded color information. Keeping image file sizes lean and mean can mean faster loading times, and if you are paying for hosting--lesser band width use.

From a user-experience standpoint, image compression strips the color profile of the image and makes a uniform color experience across multiple platforms/browsers. So it's almost a necessity if you want a smooth flow of color on your page for all users. The most problematic file type is the PNG. Although loss-less, transparency supporting, and superior in quality to other image file formats, it can be interpreted differently by the proprietary rules set up by different browsers. Stripping the color profile not only makes the file size smaller, but eliminates color mis-match issues.

I found this list of helpful compression tools which is quite comprehensive. I personally use PNG Gauntlet and have found it quick and reliable. It will often reduce Photoshop file sizes up to 50%. Average reduction is 10-20%, but that adds up when you are inserting multiple images in a theme or page.
