I believe this is in the topic of design discussion but my question is there such a thing as too many themes? I have 17 themes on my board and I've heard that too many can be a bad thing. Do you think this is true? |

I think you can have as many as you like without causing any issues other than ACP confusion. . I've seen boards that had over 100 themes active in their theme changers.

I think it is all subjective. Some people like a lot of variety and others like less. I guess the argument for having one or two themes is it creates a stronger brand image for your forum. However if you have a lot of themes you wont alienate anyone because there is a theme for every taste. So in the end it really comes down to what you are trying to achieve. |

I like to believe three is a good solid number. It gives your members the option to choose between them incase they find one to hard on the eyes whether it be to dark,bright..etc. Along with letting them switch it up every now and then just to have a change from the usual.Having only 3 themes isn't alot either,so your not really losing any "uniqueness" (or whatever you want to call it) appeal of your site and such. In the end though it's whatever makes you and your members happy, thats just my own personal preference.

It depends on whether the site is trying to establish a brand image, and secondly whether it establishes it through the appearance or the logo it has. Outline for example is a design board and so multiple themes helps to represent the range of designs that can be made for ZetaBoards themes, while it has a memorable logo that helps to give users a brand image to associate the site with. If you're going for themes to help give your users something to recognise your site with, I think having a couple can be OK if they all have a similar feel to them such as the ones on Sarah's We Are The Walking Dead forum. If I ever had multiple themes on my board, I'd probably just have a single theme which then has slight alterations such as a light and dark version or different colours, etc. Like how IFSZ had a light and dark theme but overall everyone remembers the theme as a single one that just had multiple choices. |

I personally think too many can become confusing for the members, I suppose if they are named correctly people would have an idea of what themes are which ones before they preview. Or perhaps even having a topic with a 'preview' of each theme before members go and click through each and every one. Right now my forum has 7 active themes, 1 being a mobile theme. And I feel like that is enough choices that should make people happy. I think it depends on what type of forum it is. Genre, and what the point is. I think a basic 2 dark, 2 light, 1 in between, and 1 themed theme would be the best. Giving people options!

I don't think it slows the mobile loading at all, it's like refreshing your page when it has a new theme.

I'd say it's good to have a light, dark, and maybe in-between colored theme to make your board more appealing. However, something like 5 themes would be too much if each theme was too different and not recognizable. What is a good idea would be to have one design and have several color variations for people's preferences for color and contrast levels.
