FERBY SUGGESTED that I BRING THIS IDEA HERE: Board Address: My board is private...but if someone needs the url I would be glad to PM it. Board Software: ZetaBoards Description: I'd like a code that lets me automatically post ahead of time. For example, it would let me set up posts for the future for when I am working or unavailable to post, and I would prefer it to have the option to allow some members to auto-post as well. I would like to be able to choose the date and time of the post. Ferby's response: Hi KimAnnFran, I love your code idea, I could certainly use it as well. The problem is that it's a bit problematic. The code can easily tell the time & date if you program it to and could use AJAX to post what you want it to when you want but the problem is the automatic part. A code will only load with every page load. So for this code to automatically post a topic for you, you need to be online for it to take effect but that pretty much defies the whole point of the request. Unfortunately I can't think of a way for this to work without a server needed. So what I would suggest is post this idea here and hope to get a response to whether it will be done or not. Brandon has been kind enough to give us a preview of the new update he's been working on and I've noticed he's been answering some questions lately so you might get lucky, who knows ![]() Sorry I can't be of more help ![]() |

The biggest issue, apart from how it would be coded, is how many people/boards would actually use it? If it were a feature available to all forums, but only ten forums actually used it then it's fair to say that the development time involved wouldn't be worth it. Maybe I'm wrong though and it would be immensely popular - but not overly convinced at this time. |

This is definitely more of a feature request rather than a code request (Which is good, otherwise you would have posted it in the wrong forum )I can see the advantages to such a feature myself, but I'm not sure if it would be widely used enough to justify it as something that should be worked on. |

Yeah, this really only works as a feature request. Doing this as a code requires having separate server hosting do to the delayed posts, and that server needs something that's the equivalent of storing your password so that it can post as you, which is a pretty bad idea. |

This is why I suggested the idea be posted here as a suggestion for a feature rather than a code

It sounds like a good idea. I can think of a few ways I'd utilize it on my forum, I think. |

Where can I post it as a feature? Or did I just do that? For working folks, who want to make announcements or reminders at certain times, this would be perfect. And example would be in TV show oriented boards, where perhaps there's a letter writing campaign going on, or a tweetfest to get a point across to producers. A reminder would be just what admins need to keep these things going without taking the risk of getting fired. Or, saying happy birthday, or getting conversation going, or just making things automated a bit to carry on when you cannot be there to post. Reminders of events, etc, can be posted overnight so that the next morning, they are there. It would be just for admins, tho, not necessary for everyone unless that worked better. Yes you just did that and can I personally say that if you can get fired for not posting something at a specific time, you're working with the wrong people

Does it really have to be a post? We use a script that does something similar - but as an announcement, not a post. I realize that's not what you're asking for here, but if you're talking about reminders and birthday wishes and the like an announcement should be sufficient? I guess I see no historical value in happy birthdays or reminders that would require an actual post. In our case it's used for holidays - I edit the dates in December for the upcoming year, and then it automatically wishes the members happy whatever whether I'm available or not. That part could be adapted, of course. If something like that would tide you over, I could send the script to Ferby. |

This is okay, but I wanted it to appear in the thread where everyone is currently posting to be sure they see it. I have an announcement/news area, at the top of the page, but it's not the effect I am looking for. I was looking for something like TWuffer, that posts to twitter for you while you're working
