I've been on at least half a dozen Zetaboards forums now and everyone has expressed their annoyance of the ten second cool down between posts which is utterly ridiculous, it serves to do nothing but make the shoutbox difficult to use because if you try to post again within those ten seconds, not only do you get that stupid pop up box you have to get rid of, but you're message is gone from the typing box so you have to retype it and that is extra annoying if you are doing something long or you are prone to typos. Which is why I strongly suggest that we are able to remove that ten second cool down and make using a chat system that is not in real time more worth it because most prefer a real time chat so unless you can provide that, this needs to happen! Thank you for reading, post you're thoughts below but be nice! |

I see your problem, but be aware that there are other alternatives out there that can be used instead. I know cBox is a good one, and I believe Cory has a chat box style code released on here in the code section. |

The flood control has to be there. It's not something put on as a purposeful inconvience, but it's there to prevent database errors. Just like anything else, if you send too much data to a server too fast, it will be unable to process all of it. Remove the 10 seconds from one board? No problem. Remove it from every board on the server and have users posting instantly every second for an hour? That puts massive stress on the database. Done fast enough and with enough users, it could attack the database and cause the server to crash. Granted, that's an extreme example, the more likely effect would be incredibly slow loading times on forums. A shoutbox is different from a chat room. It is not meant to update instantly as a chat room would. It is built fundamentally different from a chat room with a different function intended. If you are looking for more instant methods without delay, a chat room is the more appropriate solution. |

I have been using chat things for years, this is the only place on the net that has a shoutbox like this......and actually, these shoutboxes are one of the most problematic I have ever seen because at times, when you try to post something in the shoutbox not within those ten allotted seconds, you get sent to an error page about some security thing which doesn't make sense at all. The problem is, I've tried to add a chat room on one of the forums I admin and hasn't worked yet for some reason. Plus, on private boards, it won't work because you have to put it on a damn webpage which is public and with no option for private webpages which is dumb however, I know it is possible to make it private but I have no idea how. |

Have you tried Planet Nexus? It has an IRC style integrate chat which may well suit your boards needs? |

The text disappearing issue can possibly be resolved with JavaScript. |

I definitely agree that it's annoying when the message you type disappears after you unsuccessfully try to post before ten seconds is up. I can deal with the delay, but I hate having to retype my message each time. It'd be nice if that could be changed. |

As a note: the text disappearing when a shout is sent too soon after a previous message is a complaint that Brandon is aware of and considering solutions for. Hopefully it'll behave a bit nicer in the future - but, like any change, we don't know when this might happen - and it might not occur at all if Brandon can't find a way that suits our needs for security and optimal performance. |

Scratch that, a 'security error' no matter which way you tried it. |

You just have to think outside the box. This adds a "restore shout" link to the shoutbox options which places the last shout you attempted to send back in the input field. So you can click the link to get the shout back. Or you can click the link to spam a shoutbox more quickly. Admins use at your own risk. This is by no means an official solution and we'll offer no support for it. It's pretty hacky, but it might help some of you out so I'll share it.

Something similar, it works relatively well but is a bit temperamental due to server lag and delay. It adds any subsequent shouts to a queue and pushes them to the server after the 10 second wait.
EDIT: So, using this you can make as many shouts as you want, and it will post them all to the shoutbox, but they won't appear for about 10 seconds. Basically, it is the same as if you shouted with 10 seconds intervals, but this way you don't need to worry about the wait. Example: Shout: "Hello" Shout: "my" Shout: "name" Shout: "is" Shout: "Viral" Usually, this would post the first shout, and then you'd receive a popup telling you to wait 10 seconds, but with my code this will remove the popup and post them all for you, but with a 10 second delay between each one.
