i was just pondering on this..wouldnt it be nice to actually have an option in your profile to (delete) your own acct with attached description on why you want to delete acct. and it could be submitted to the admin for review

Or you could just send a PM to an admin asking the exact same thing.

Seems a little superfluous to me, if we wanted our accounts deleted for whatever reasons, then most admins would respect it and delete your account for you if you asked.. Hiding behind something like this seems to me to be a bit like going behind peoples backs to do things eh...

Twilight is upon me, and soon night must fall.

I will tell you why I am against this. For the same reason users delete topics and posts at times. There have been times where users act in the moment and in that moment, they make poor choices. Some edit/delete posts that they later wish they could get back. Others do that to their account. Therefore, it is better if checks exist to stop rash decisions. Talking with an admin generally falls under that area. Normally, if a user sends a pm wishing for account deletion and the reason is rational, I will comply. If not, I might inquire as to why the account needs to be deleted. In some cases, users have changed their minds. Now, I know there are some admins who refuse to delete accounts, unfortunately for members, so long as these admins do not abuse these accounts, that is within their right as admin to refuse. Our terms of use that you agree to when registering make this very clear.

I am a member on a few Pro Boards and you can delete your own account in your profile settings, i have spoken to a lot of admin on them and they say that they wish that option wasn't there at all. They log on and find posts missing and members gone. And if they do change their minds and wanting to come back, usually the admin won't let them back on.

It's rather frustrating when posts and things are deleted. If a person chooses to not use their account anymore, that is definitely their right. But it doesn't harm anything. If they fear people are going to find the account or something, just change the email or any information that is available to be seen by the public. Or even request a name change to something you do not normally use so people would not be able to find you if that is something you're worried about.

I feel as though if you join a community, you joined for a good reason, if you decide to leave you're always welcome to back but there is just not much point in deleting things. At least in my opinion. I also hate deleting accounts on Zetaboards because the number of registered users and on the profile are different from that point on.

I agree with what Stephen said. It is really rare for me to agree with him, usually he talks some random nonsense so I have to disagree (:P), but not this time.

I am that kind of admin that will never delete any account unless I'm forced by officials or other higher position people. I don't care about reasons people may want to delete their accounts; if they want to get rid of it too badly they will have to edit all their posts manually and remove their content.

I guess the admins get a bit annoyed that they find missing posts and members all the time eh.. Instead of seeing posts and names it's 'deleted user' or something like it..

That option is available on phpBB3 forums. It has to then be admin approved before the account is deleted.

Not sure I think it's a good idea. It should be down to the owner of the forum to decide if they want to delete a users account or not.
