Just a curious little survey, do you use any of the features listed in the various polls? If you don't, how come? If so, is there any specific way you might use it? For example, if you use the calendar, how do you use it to enhance your community? :)

Have a question that would be good to include that I forgot to use? Feel free to suggest it to be added. ^_^

Website Maker - Yes. I have quite a lot of them for various reasos. Though, they still need some love, like different CSS or possibility to reorder them somehow. And the characters limit for the title is a PAIN.

Blog - I have a few entries, but the last one is from the ages ago. I prefer to create a topic rather than a blog entry. For example because nobody is reading blogs. People are reading topics. They don't want to search for blogs. If the profile page and mini profile would allow us to do some magic with the entries and promote them to top, or pin them, then maybe... Plus, if generally the replies page, posting page &c would be more users friendly...

Board Feed - nope. I have active topics for that.

Calender - nope. I have a real one in my home, plus topic in staff forum.

Shoutbox - I have it enabled, but it begs for features. Better moderation, possibility to queue shouts, their ID better visible, possibility to sticky message, ban single users frpm it without moving to a different group &c &c etc....... In fact I'm very rarely using it, I use the Shouts topic from my old Shoutbox co0de instead.

Board portal - nope. Once I thought of using it, but again I found it quite difficult to arange, so I quickly stopped thinking about it.

Status updates - Not at all. Just look when I have changed my status on this board....

CLASS BBCode - I have a lot of them, and I use many of them. Though, it would really be nice if the Support Board could start supporting it...

Joinable groups - I have one or two of them... I used to use them sometimes to give permissions. The biggest pain of the joinable group is that it cannot be hidden nor I cannot set its colour, or rank image, or other permissions. Therefore the joinable groups for now just a flowers that You can watch at them, and basically do nothing with them. If I want to give someone special access or abilities, I would rather want to give him that without anybody noticing that. Though I can do that through Alternate Mask function in the groups, far easier is add someone to the group and kick him from it rather than playing in the ACP.

Avatars - I have plenty of my own, and I do believe that my users don't need my help in setting them their own.

Guest box - nope. It is too huge.

Posts merger - nope. I hate this feature.

The closest way to promote blogs built-in is the Blogroll page which lists the newest blog per member. Even then though, I agree blogs are just easily overlooked. I only use blogs to write notes into it that I want others to see.

I just checked, my lastest blog entry on my board is from 2008, and in total I wrote 13 entries. With the blogroll (or list of autotools, or list of status updates) the problem is that it is yet another page to read. Yet another page to add a link to and place button somewhere. If we would be able to add custom links to the submenu, then it would not be that difficult, but since we cannot, we must add some code (yet another one, but who really would want to add a code to a page that nobody will be visiting anyway?). But people are lazy and they won't click those lists because nothing interesting is in there. Plus, also because they don't care about others. If the blogs could be seen in the mini profile, then people perhaps would look at them while reading a topic. Otherwise they won't even enter the reader's profile page. Like many of us - we mostly aren't profile stalkers.

You forgot for example about the STAFF BBCode.

Added. ;)

As for my answers:

Website Maker - Yes, because I use it for my boards home page to list all the latest gaming news that has been posted to the forums, as well as other info such as upcoming game releases, affiliates, reviews, etc.

Blogs - As stated, yes but only to write notes I'd like others to see. I have it enabled for my board just in case anyone else wants to use it, but I personally don't really ever find much use for it as generally what I think about on a forum is stuff I can typically post in a topic somewhere.

Board Feed - I have this linked on my board for anyone who would rather use that to read all the newest posts in one place rather than per topic, but I personally don't often read it as I prefer to go to the actual topics.

Calendar - Yes, I use it to list all the upcoming game releases as well as any important gaming or forum events.

Shoutbox - I have it enabled just for my staff to discuss minor things that don't warrant their own topic.

Portal - No. To be honest, I hate how limited it is and that's why I use the website maker. Let's me do way more and exactly how I want it to be. The fact the portal takes topics from a single forum area is one limiter, another is it's always the first post of a topic, which is useless to me when all news for a particular game is contained in a single topic.

Status Updates - Rarely, but I use it. Can't say I'd miss it if it didn't exist though.

Class BBCode - Yes, I use it mostly to enable floated images in posts. Never used it for much else yet though.

Joinable Groups - Normally, no. I've rarely used it for a forum event such as Video-Game Heroes vs. Villains, but other than that, never, so I count it as a no.

Avatar Gallery - I did when I first used ZetaBoards, but not any more. Most users can and will just find and use their own avatars rather than something provided in the gallery. I doubt many users even bother to browse them to know if a board offers any custom avatars in the gallery or not.

Guest Welcome Box - Nope, as has been stated, it's too large. I just have two redirection forums, one to log in, and one to register. Much smaller and more appealing I find.

Post Merge - Yes. No real reason, I just enabled it to save the hassle of people potentially double posting in a short period of time.

Staff BBCode - Yes, I use it to make hidden notes in topics about something, such as if a post is hidden, I'll add a note to say don't approve it for a particular reason.

Website Maker - Yes, it's a big part of our forum because we use it for our Shops.

Blogs - I don't use it on any boards, including my own.

Board Feed - Nope.

Calendar - Nope, not much use for it on my forum atm.

Shoutbox - We have it enabled for a small portion of members/staff.

Portal - Nope, I very rarely look at portals on any forum.

Status Updates - I haven't used it though I've seen some members use it.

Class BBCode - Not even sure haha.

Joinable Groups - Never used them.

Avatar Gallery - Yes, we have a variety of custom Walking Dead avatars for members to use and I see members use them quite a bit.

Guest Welcome Box - Yes, though it is a bit bulky. Use it for information regarding the roleplay for those who are interested in signing up solely for that.

Post Merge - Yes.

Staff BBCode - Nope, we usually just talk on Skype.

About the Staff BBCode - I used it when I was able to CSS it. I have a black theme, and it was lime green, so even a blind man could notice the Staff message.

Now, when the Staff Note styling was gone (though it was live just for a month...), I stopped using it.

How many of you are aware of the [indent] BBCode too? That's probably one of the most obscure built-in BBCode tags I'm aware of that has nothing to signify it exists besides user awareness. :P

An example of it in use.

Just curious, but is this poll gauging public interest for potential updates to Zetaboards?

Actually back in 2008 I remember creating a couple of topics to Brandon to include it in that beauty list of BBCodes. So I'm well aware of it. As well that the Border BBCode or List BBocde have some options, SIZE-7 will make the text invisible.. and some other things. &c

In fact when I was sill writing articles, I used the Indent BBCode a lot.

No. I made it purely off my own back just out of sheer curiosity of how much people use things. It's not been made for any official purpose of gathering info for ideas or updates or anything. Besides the fact I'm staff this topic is no different to if any regular member had made it instead.

Board feed would probably make your dynamo bot so much easier to work with.

Ah okay. Just wondering. :)

Out of all the features asked about here, I always wanted to do more with the website portal. The problem for me was that it was very dysfunctional across themes. On one theme it might have looked good, but on another it would look completely different, and at times, be broken.

I'll probably do the poll later and update this post with some other observations, but I wanted to make a point about the Board Feed. It may seem redundant to the active topics list, however:

The Board Feed, imo, is THE most useful search link for mobile users. It lets you actually read the content of all the currently active topics, including the shoutbox and other areas that don't show up on the active topics list (such as blog entries). I believe it should be included in the design of every mobile theme.
