Hello, We all know that the Portal feature offered by ZB is pretty basic, but it does offer a whole lot of potential with a bit of work, largely thanks to the fact that you can use HTML and also JS in blocks. Surely I'm not alone in thinking that there is a lot of scope to create some quite incredible homepages by using the functionality that the Portal can provide? So what have you done with your Portal, and also what would you like to do with your Portal? I see a major project evolving from this, and I think it's about time we all unleashed the power of our Portals! So what do you all think? |

Planet Nexus uses the portal page as our home page. We call it The Wall. It is used to house a dynamic display of all the member board and Nexus Tree stats. We use the custom portal blocks plus most of the built in options. We've renamed the shoutbox to "Scrawl on the Wall". I think its a pretty unique use of the portal page. |

I usually use my Portal to announce news and updates, some guests have told me: "You have a cute blog" and such comments. They are surprised to see that it has a "forum" included. As you can see in the picture, there are some blocks with content, I have more, but these represent what I use most often, usually use much HTML, but the bbcode is best. The portal has problems with some JS code, once I put a code "online days", but I take it off because I felt many problems. Fortunately Disqus script worked very well although I have not yet any comments xD I would really like the portal have a comment system where responses made by members will be visualized as in disqus (with the avatar and the ability to respond on both sides, in the portal and in the forum where the topic is published). I also wish there was some sort of pagination. For example, we establish that x number of post is displayed on the Portal, but there is no way to see the latest unless you enter the forum. Pagination makes it easier for guests to see the latest news without having to enter the forum... or something like that... I love my Portal and always try to make it look cute =3 Sorry for my bad English m(_ _)m Spoiler: click to toggle

A million years ago I made a "mod" to turn the InvisionFree portal into a webpage ( Link here I too felt a portal could be so much more. I agree with Helena, the Planet Nexus portal (The Wall) is a great use of theirs. |

Have to agree, Planet Nexus is by far the best use of the Portal that I have seen so far on ZB. I assume it uses PHP to pull a lot of the data on there though? Didn't Brandon hint at greater functionality for the Portal in the next update? It would be really interesting to see exactly what that involved. Personally I would like to see a mini calendar that linked to your forums main calendar and any events etc as a start. I guess it would be easy enough to create one using HTML but as it stands it would have to be a completely manual process which means a whole lot of work. I agree with maytads that a proper comments solution would be good, although a very basic version is available that Cory made here. Fingers crossed that Brandon gets a wiggle on with this update, and that he breaths some much needed love on our Portals! |

Started experimenting a little and it's quite surprising how good a Portal can be made to look, but it is generally quite a bit of work. What I would really like to do is have the calendar in a side Portal block, I can knock up a crude HTML one but it isn't dynamic in the sense that it pulls the data like birthdays and events from the actual calendar. The best I can manage without a whole lot of work is to just make the whole thing clickable link to the main calendar. |

I love that theme there, it looks amazing! What is it called? Anyway, I have to agree that Planet Nexus has a pretty incredible portal. I personally however would like to see someone who's using a code that allows guests to leave an email address for updates. |

I guess an easy way to do this would be to have a forum where guest posting is allowed, they could then leave an email address there. Just had a play about with Cory's comments code but can't seem to get that working for guests so I think the first option might be your best idea, or alternatively, and thinking about it I think it's a far better idea would be to create a "Leave email for updates" form using Reid's flexible Form Script. EDIT: Just tested using Reid's script and it pretty easy to setup, guests can then enter their name and email address (or whatever you specify) and it will post a topic in a place where Staff can see it -

Since everyone is quite passionate about making the portal looking nicer on their boards, I'll make sure our's is in use for when we relaunch. I'll probably adopt it as our homepage

I've jazzed mine up a fair bit but as I think there is so much potential that hasn't been discovered yet I've made a forum to share ideas and showcase some of the things that have been done. I think it might surprise a lot of people when hey see the sort of things that can be done to make it a proper homepage. |

BLURRED ///////////////////////////////////////// By the way, I found a simple way to add comments to your portal. Go to this website: http://www.htmlcommentbox.com/ to get yourself a "unique" code. Click on the Copy the code button. An example of the code they give you is:
What I did was copied the script info from the above code and hosted it in File Manager and linked to that file. See, their code has two pipes in it that are being encoded by Zetaboards and, as such, their script doesn't work. As such, here is my new code:
Anyway, I went into Portal Manager and added a box with HTML as the source and put the above code in it. POOF, I have a comment box on my site. Live example: http://w11.zetaboards.com/justanothertest/site/ |

That's pretty neat Skyron - is there a way for board staff to remove comments or edit them in case of abuse? |

If you sign up an account at that site there are tons of things you can do/control. Note, I'm not recommending that site and am in no way affiliated with them. I just Googled them. |
