Theme print size

So I've got a theme sort of worked out in my head, but I want to 'put it on paper' so to speak so that i don't forget it. What size should I make the print for starters? And should i use parts of it for the actual theme? (E.G. Take the H2, divide it up into three parts and then make it a 3-piece bit of code).

Many thanks,

There's no real 'right' size to make the print - I recommend starting with whatever fits on your monitor nicely. I've found that 1100px width is a good width for me, and then I make a large height that I can work with, keeping in mind that I can always make it bigger later.

After the print is done, I usually slice up anything that can't be created with pure code and save it as an image. I usually make a new version of the PSD and hide whatever needs to be hidden (i.e. text), flatten it, slice and save what I need, and then revert it back to having layers. Does that make sense? :)

Ok, that makes sense. I'll play around with sizes to see what works well :)

I get some of what you're saying, but not all. Do you mind explaining further?

Thanks,

I'm not Cody, but I'll try to explain better, maybe... What he is saying is to size the print to a good size that fits your monitor, say 1100 pixels. You can make the actual theme stretch to the resolution of the computer monitor that the user is viewing later, so don't worry too much about the size. Basically, make the print size enough to work with for now. Bigger is not always better since you can stretch the theme later For example, I am using Cool Mint and my resolution is 1920x1080 and the theme is stretched to fit my screen. You might be using a monitor with 1440x900 resolution, and it will also stretch to fit that resolution. Such a theme is said to be fluid, at least in the green portions of the H2 which is meant to stretch across the screen up to a point.

What you might do is design your theme in Photoshop as a print and add text in the print to define all your text colors. Now that you have done that, you want to have not only a version of the print with the board text, but you will want a version that you can crop out the pieces (H2, logo, submenu, etc.) that you will code for your theme. At this point, you will slice out any images that cannot be coded and just simply save them, such as a logo or any other images you might have on the page. Basically, you want to design it as you want it to appear on screen. Any other questions?

I'm glad I explained that well. Even more impressive considering I haven't designed in five years or more. I feel old now. :P
