Hey guys, just thought I'd make an observation regarding Combining Topics as I exercised this function today for the first time in a long time.

It says you need to tick two check boxes to combine topics which is fair enough but if your topics are on different pages of the forum, how would you do that? I tried opening a new tab to check the second one but it didn't work. I had to go into the ACP and change how many topics is shown per page to a much higher number than usual so the topics were on the same page of the forum, then change it back after they'd been combined, which was a little of an inconvenience. Then I noticed it didn't add together the views from both threads that were combined and actually reset it to 0, which made it look kinda odd as the thread has a lot of replies.

I was sure in the past combining was done differently and it was maybe called merging instead.

M is for Mod

Most of the time you have this situation, you are wanting to combine a new topic with one posted some time ago.

As Jonathan points out below, the checkboxes should carry over, but if not---To get them on the same page easily, you can first bump the older topic to put it on the first page. Then you can combine the two topics at that point.

The views are reset to zero because you are actually creating a new topic when you combine two others. This can be a consideration when you have posted links to one of the pre-combined topics. Those links will now produce an error message.

You may be remembering "Merge Topic", which is a moderation option in InvisionFree.

Bump the threads to the first page, or move to the same section?

As per this announcement, moderation actions carry over per page: http://if.invisionfree.com/topic/5126099/1/#new

Unless I'm misunderstanding the problem.

You know, I never even thought to just bump the old topic :giggle: but I guess since my members were actively posting in the newer topic, and the older one had a similar name,I didn't wanna confuse them for a hot minute XD I think you're right Helena, I must be thinking IF for merge topics.

Oh thanks Jonathan, I didn't think that would work (but does, as just tried it), just because I'd be loading a new page, guess that puts that bed.

I do think views should be combined, though. Even though it is technically a new topic, it would just be bizarre to combine two large topics with thousands of views, to go to 0, yet with hundreds of replies for example.

But thanks for the info :)
