I'm in the middle of creating the next Dynamo module where users will be able to rate topics and give a general consensus of whether or not a topic is worth reading. However, there are many different ways I could go about doing this, and would like your input on what you believe would be the best decision, and why. 1) 5 Star System. This would allow users to select a rating between 1 and 5 stars. This is the old system that youtube used. 2) Thumbs up/ thumbs down. Binary choice - you either like the topic, or you don't. Could also have a "meh" button. This is what youtube use now, and statistics have proven that this is a far better system for them, of course we're now talking topics, not videos. 3) A combination of the above. A system which allows you to "give" a topic stars (sort of like a reputation system). If I really like a topic, I might give it 3 stars, and if someone else likes a topic, they might give it 3 stars. The topic would then be shown as having 6 stars. Of course with a system like this, you would see something like "6 ★", not "★★★★★★". Admins would be able to change it so people can only give up to 'x' stars per topic, and all the other usual group/user settings that Dynamo incorporates. Maybe also the possibility of removing stars. Please let me know what you think! |

Thumbs Up/Thumbs Down would be my choice. That could lead to a box somewhere that displays the last "X" topic's Up-voted and such. |

Thanks for the comments so far. I've been polling this on a few other forums as well and it's pretty tied between the combination and thumbs up/ down option. I'll leave it for a week or so before deciding. |

I think the thumbs down option is unnecessary or at worse, problematic. Just an up can be calculated to determined popular posts. The thumbsdown/unlike function is usually abused or can be used maliciously. I think it's best to have it so you either can like something (and remove it if you change your mind) or just don't post anything and vote by not voting. |

This is the exact reason why I hate the thumbs down button on YouTube. Plus it's also why (in a recent quote) Mark Zuckerburg doesn't want to add such a feature to Facebook. However it has proved effective for places such as Reddit where people actually downvote for proper reasons so I'd say leave it up to the forum owner to decide which feature(s) he/she wants with this system. More options/control is always a welcome idea
