If you fully design the theme, I don't see why you wouldn't be able to. That being said, you can't run down to the resource forum and sell other people's themes, etc.

I might be wrong here but I've always seen people selling ZB themes..

Quantum-locked when observed.

We don’t have a problem with you selling your themes in theory. However, if you are considering this, please beware some potential pitfalls:

  • Themes that you sell need to be your own work. Obviously you’re not going to sell someone else’s theme, but you also can’t go around modifying or tweaking other people’s themes. There is a thin line between derivative work and work simply inspired by similar themes. (And again, you might understand this completely, but I’m putting this out there for anyone else with a similar question who finds this topic.)
  • Along the same vein, if your themes often rely on third-party codes to work their magic, you might need to talk to the creators of those codes and get their permission before you sell those themes. Code creators generally release their codes with the idea that anyone else can use them, but if you start making money off themes that rely on those codes, they will probably want some compensation. ;)
  • Finally, be careful if any of your themes contain copyrighted work that isn’t your own. For example, generally it’s OK to make a Star Wars theme for your board, because you're not profiting off it and it probably falls under fair use (or at least, Disney doesn't care). But if you sell a theme with Star Wars images, then it’s a commercial use of Disney’s IP, and Scrooge McDuck will send Huey, Dewey, and Louie around to mess you up. This doesn’t just apply to stuff from big companies—any image or other resource that you didn’t create must be free for commercial use or you need to contact its creator and talk about licensing.

So it’s OK to sell your themes, but be smart about it—like any commercial venture involving creative work, make sure you’ve covered all your bases.
