How did you learn how to skin?

So, I'm a complete newbie when it comes to skinning. Haven't tried anything yet, but I'm confident that I could eventually get the hang of it.

My question is, how did you go about learning how to skin?

I plain and simple don't know where to start, I went to www.w3schools.com to check out the CSS tutorials and I don't want to learn all of that if it's not all neccesary to create a skin such as the Skin Zone's skin or any other beautiful skin.

Can anyone help me out?

I first started using the generators found on the IFSZ main site. As I got more experienced, I stopped using the generators and began to edit the default IF CSS myself. I also tried looking though some topics in the Skinning Assistance Forum and getting ideas based off of other skins...

Then I just started experimenting and learning how to skin myself... :/

Also, you will (hopefully) get better as you make more skins...

Actually, I found one of these informational posts and started working from there. I've also been coding HTML/CSS/JS for a long time now, so most of my training was just learning the IF tips and tricks.

....

On your board go to,

Admin CP >> Manage Style Sheets.
It is from that location that you'll find the CSS, which is what you'll need to edit to change the skin.

Much of skinning is a learn as you go experience, but the following generalized links will be of help to you as you learn:

If after attempting to manually edit the CSS via the Manage Style Sheets pages you decide that it is too complicated, there are alternative methods you can take. The links below are to Skin Generators located on our website that you can make a skin with.

Good luck and if you have any further questions, don't hesitate to post here.

I taught myself. I substituted every little part of the CSS with the hex code #000 (black) so it was easy to spot so I got the hang of all the different sections and then I examined parts of the CSS to see how certain things were done like images.

Trial and error was the main part of my path to skinning over two years ago now. Experimentation is the biggest thing, in my opinion. Try new things, innovate and see what you can come up with. Eventually, you'll start to get better and who knows -- maybe you'll be the top skinner here at the SZ someday.

Locke is very right. All the people on the Skin Team started where you are now, so there's no knowing what could happen.

What I did for my first few skins was use the AIO Skin Generator. It has some, well actually quite a few, flaws and it limits your range of customization on a skin somewhat, but it helps you learn the basics of what does what, which is essential for later. It takes time and devotion to get into skinning, but if you keep at it, you should get it eventually. That is the mistake most people make. They dont want to try so hard to understand something, so they just give up and say that its too hard.

I hope you get the hang of it, good luck ^_^

How did I start off skinning? REALLY BADLY that about sums it up

I just went to a generator, and filled in all the blank spots with random digets because I didn't know what any of the stuff was, or what a hex code was.

And I basicly tought my self the basics. Aside from that... I think what helped me the most was when I desided to ask Kman a few questions abou t how to do stuff :/
