My backpack weighs 30 pounds, and I have no locker. It used to be a strain on my back, but now it feels weightless. I have no problem with it, and I haven't experienced pain because of it. |

No, there's no such thing at my school. And for some people it isn't convieniant for them to stop at their locker, or they probably don't even have lockers at their school. |

My school has elevators, not enough to transport every student. you have no idea what it's like in other school districts either. And you keep missing the part about students. At my school with the amount of students and the size of the school it's very dense and hard to even walk around at times. *-) |

My backpack really hurts my back, but thats what lockers are for. People have gotten bullied and hit for rolling around those stupid suitcase backpack. Not a good idea. |

Our school doesn't allow rolling backpacks because it doesn't fit into our lockers, but I used to use one for elementary school. |

It's only 4 minutes, and every time I barely make it to class.
Imagine going to school with 4,100+ other students, with a small, cramped school. |

People are just getting lazier and lazier these days... live with it. It's just, what, 15 pounds at the most? Exercize your back muscles a bit. How many people actually hurt their back carrying around a backpack? |

My school provides lockers only for P.E. We have a few elevators throughout the school, but only disabled students are allowed to use them. Fortunately, all of our classrooms have class sets, so carrying books is not an issue, we have a set at home and that set stays at home. The only thing we need to keep in our backpacks is our notebooks and folders and things. I'd be surprised if my back pack weighs even 10 pounds. As for the schools where the students aren't as fortunate, it would be a much better for solution for each room to have a class set, and to purchase a copy machine or two that all teachers would have access to. Why carry around a whole book when you're only going to need to use a few pages of it? What would be cool, is if the school charged a small fee for each semester to all students who didn't want to carry around their books, and that money would be used to purchase the paper, ink and the copy machines. Those students would be provided copies so that they don't have to carry around their books, and I'm sure that everyone would do it, no one wants to carry around their books. It sure as heck is a better solution than having a car wash in a sad attempt to build an elevator.

The problem with that idea is that most school textbooks are about $50-$80 per copy. If you have 6-8 classes, that's well over $300 just for the extra copy of books. I mean, true, once you get them once you don't need to buy new books every year, but where's the school gonna come up with the money to buy all those books in the first place? |

Well through hiking I am used to carrying 60 pounds on my back, therefore a 20-30 pound school pack isn't much of a big deal. This year my classes are light, so I simply carry my books around. |

My idea of an alternitive? Computer books as PDFs. Worksheets as template files that need to be filled in then uploaded to the teacher's computer via FTP. The world of tomorrow will hold only a laptop for each student. I personally am getting a laptop soon, and have permission from most teachers to type my notes in class instead of handwritting, and to type my work instead of hand writting it. The world needs this change, I'd like to give it a kickstart. Just think about that, it's already starting in colleges, high schools won't be but a couple of decades away (if that far). Something to think on, no? Anyway, on the subject of back pain, yeah, I've always had a heavy backpack, a LOT more than 15% my body weight; closer to 40%. I have a very bad back now, but I simply have zero time to use my locker, so every single school book and notebook is with me every hour of every school day. And my back continues to hurt, but I'm used to it, it's been in pain like this for what, going on 6 years? It's nice to have a showerhead tha can spit water out at high pressures ![]() My $0.02 |

I concur with Myr about laptops. I can't wait until this change reaches everywhere. I know that I am using that medium for note taking in college

And I don't care, as I stated in my topic that that's not the point of this topic, as "Oh, I have stairs, I have to bring all over." Well as I said before, ban backpacks, and maybe instead create a fundraiser for your school, and build elevators. Problem solved.
