People are just getting lazier and lazier these days... live with it. It's just, what, 15 pounds at the most? Exercize your back muscles a bit. How many people actually hurt their back carrying around a backpack?

Let's put it this way. My contra is lighter than my backpack, and if people start to "deform" by having that big instrument on their backs, then imagine what my backpack must be doing.

I agree about the laptops in schools (I can type at least 10x faster than I can write), but imagine how easily people would get distracted. You'd have people playing pinball and watching porn in math class... it would be a nightmare for education.

let's see, back when i was in highschool (only about 2 or 3 years ago mind you, i finished at Yr 10, did some Yr 11 then dropped out and did a Certificate 2 in IT @ CIT (Canberra Institue of Technology, ACT version of NSW's TAFE).) i carried ALL my books (Maths, English, Computer Studies, History, Geography, Science) and all the paperwork that got handed out in class, and i NEVER emptied my bag out since 1) there were NO lockers, & 2) i was too damn slack to have to empty everything out then re-pack it in, in the morning and risk leaving something at 1 parent's place that i'd need for the week i'd be spending at the other parent's place (mother & father split since '94, i had a 70-30 time share in my effing mother's favour until i forced the family court to let me have 50-50 in dad's favour, which was week-about) and since i'm very prone to putting things in one place and forgetting about them, i didn't want to risk that so i kept everything in my bag. then when i changed schools and started Yr 11, i had Science, Maths, Business Studies, English, a whole bunch of 2-3 kilo text books {one, maybe 2 or 3 per class} (4.5 -7 pounds for those using the Imperial System), PLUS library books i borrowed, PLUS a 4-5 kilo laptop. considering the 'perfect weight' for a 17 yo teen is 80-90 kilos, i was pushing the 15% weight limit to near about 20-25% of my body weight (not including the fact i've piled on enough excess weight to make me well over the 100 kilo mark). and yet it never bothered me. (only problem was getting up and down all those effing stairs between classes & before and after recess & lunch!)

As for the schools where the students aren't as fortunate, it would be a much better for solution for each room to have a class set, and to purchase a copy machine or two that all teachers would have access to. Why carry around a whole book when you're only going to need to use a few pages of it? What would be cool, is if the school charged a small fee for each semester to all students who didn't want to carry around their books, and that money would be used to purchase the paper, ink and the copy machines. Those students would be provided copies so that they don't have to carry around their books, and I'm sure that everyone would do it, no one wants to carry around their books. It sure as heck is a better solution than having a car wash in a sad attempt to build an elevator.  :P

The problem with that idea is that most school textbooks are about $50-$80 per copy. If you have 6-8 classes, that's well over $300 just for the extra copy of books. I mean, true, once you get them once you don't need to buy new books every year, but where's the school gonna come up with the money to buy all those books in the first place?

No, I don't mean that the money would go to purchase another set of books. I mean that the school should invest in some copy machines and the money would go towards the upkeep of the copy machines. So when you're assigned to do Pg.436 #'s 1-20, you only have to carry around Pg. 436, not the whole book. It would be the responsibility of the teachers to run off the copies.

I think it's a good idea. :ermm:

Backpacks are the easist way to transport all my school stuff. I can't think of an alternative that could do better. And roller backpacks don't work if you don't have a locker and you go to a school with a ton of stairs and students.

:|

What's the problem with roller back packs and lockers? :/

And your school can get elevator, it'll work. And my point isn't that as stated in the topic.

People make fun of people with roller back packs at my school.

Computer's were the worst things to ever happen to kids/teenagers.

As for backpacks? Cry more princess, if you had some muscle in your back it wouldnt bother you at all. There is also way to many kids getting rides to school, we NEED to walk, we NEED to be active. This world is soon going to be completely obese.

And, im 100% sure sitting in your computer chairs all day is KILLING your back 1000x more than your backpack.

1) Carry around a tuba on your back all day, and see how you like it.

2) My school is too poor to investment in comfy computer chairs. We have to deal with wooden/plastic ones.

I, luckily, don't currently have to carry that much. So backpacks are no big problem for me. However, I do know others who have backpacks that could topple a small elephant. (if there are any elephants that wear backpacks) And I myself have had times when I have to carry four books, four binders, and everything else I need for school.

Unfortunately, backpacks are the most convenient way to carry everything, especially at my school where lockers are optional and almost nobody uses them. So, I think backpacks should still be allowed, but teachers should be encouraged to plan so that students don't need to carry their books to school often, because teaching students how to lighten loads is pointless.

Everyday, eachday.... we carry our backpacks to school. Our backpacks can actually kill our back, and causes backpain. Chiropracters state that if a backpack weighs more than 15% of your weight, it may cause pain, and it's not good for your back. My brother conducted a science fair project on backpacks, and found that a majority of the students at my school have backpain, from backpacks. Also that a majority of them have backpacks that weigh over 15% of their bodyweight.

So should backpacks be banned? Bring in roller backpacks instead? Though some of you may say, "Oh, roller backpacks cause pain, people trip over them, or you can't roll them up on stairs." Well that's not my point. Or maybe schools should lessen school supplies, and textbooks, or provide a class set. What do you think, and what's your opinion? Discuss. :)

You could always get an ergonomic backpack. I have one. Attach the proper straps and the weight is evenly distributed. This way you can carry upwards of 15% but I don't recommened it anyways. Rolling backpacks would be nice and you could get one right now if you wanted. Nothing is stopping you. But it doesn't seem practical and I don't want to be the only idiot dragging a rolling backpack all day long. Maybe they'll be in fashion one day, that'd be cool.

1) I'm not the one who chose to be in band.

2) Whats your point here..? This goes with my point that they are killing our backs.

And you guys think even if you have the most compfortable chairs, it is still not good for us teenagers who are still developing to be sitting all day.
