Creating a FAQ via the Board Guidelines
Topic Started: Feb 12 2006, 09:34 PM (2,502 Views)
This is a little Documentation I thought that would be good for the Invisionfree community since many people are wanting to create FAQ systems for their board. A lot of people may already know how to do this and a lot of people may not. The FAQ system I have in mind can be created by your Board Guidelines in your Administrator CP by combining HTML links to new topics you create in hidden forum's.

First Step: Creating a Category to place your Forums In
The first step is to create a Category for your hidden forums you want to place your questions in for the FAQ. To create a category go to your Administrator CP -> Forum Control -> New Category. Once you are at the "New Category" page insert a name for your category in the Category Name box (Example: FAQ). Your Forum State should stay Visible.

Click Create this category once you are done.

Second Step: Creating Forums to place your Questions In
The second step is to create forums to place your questions in for the FAQ. To create a Forum go to your Administrator CP -> Forum Control -> New Forum. Once you are on the "New Forum" page you need to configure the settings listed below. Some of these settings required are already set by default.

Add to which parent?: The category you just created for the hidden forums.
Forum Name: What you want your FAQ page to be called. (Example: User Maintenance)
Default date cut off for topic display: Show All

The Permission Access Levels you can set whatever you would like to. It would be best if only Administrators can "Read", "Reply", Start", and "Upload" though so other User Groups will not be able to view the forums on the main index.

Click Create this forum once you are done.

Repeat the above steps for other forums you want for the FAQ.

Third Step: Creating Questions for the FAQ
Once you have created a forum for the particular category for your FAQ go to the forum you created. Once you are in that forum click the Posted Image button to create a new topic for the question. The Topic Title will be the question that will be displayed in the FAQ and the Description put in the post box will be the answer.

Once you are done click Post New Topic.

Repeat the above steps for other questions and answers you want to be displayed in that individual forum.

Fourth Step: Displaying Questions in the Board Guidelines
The fourth step is to display the questions in the Board Guidelines using HTML links that will redirect you to a topic that your questions and answers are displayed in. Go to your Administrator CP -> System Settings -> Board Guidelines.

Once you are on your "Board Guidelines" page you can insert the links to the topics with the questions and answers on them with this form of HTML.
<a href="URL">Text to be displayed</a>

Just change URL to the URL of the topic and Text to be displayed to whatever you want to be displayed in your Board Guidelines (Example: Questions #1).

Repeat the above steps for other links you want to be displayed in the FAQ to the question/answer topics.

Once you are done you need to make sure it displays in your board header next to the Portal link by putting a tick mark in the box Yes for Show link in header to guidelines?. The Title to use in header? will be the name displayed in the board header next to the Portal link (Example: FAQ)

Click Submit Changes once you are done.

Notes - Required
Once you are done with creating your FAQ system go to your Administrator CP -> Forum Control -> Manage Forums and select Edit for the Category you created the forums in to display your questions and answers and were it says Category State select Hidden from forum list - can access via URL if known and this will make it were the links displayed in your Board Guidelines are only accessible by links. Click Amend this category once you are done.

Once you have set the category state go to your Administrator CP -> Forum Control -> Permission Masks, select a mask to edit, and scroll down to the category you created for the FAQ and make sure to put a check mark in the "Read" box for the user group you want to be able to view these questions via the Board Guidelines by clicking the link. Click Update Forum Permissions once you are done.

The links displayed in your Board Guidelines will display in the same window when clicked.

You can find a preview of this FAQ system I created on my Test Board here. Click "FAQ" in the header. Note, the questions and answers I used were based on a vBulletin FAQ system to give a better explanation of how this system can be used.

Authorized by yugfreak90, also known as Cory R on Invisionfree Support.

Hopefully this will help people control their board better with a basic FAQ system that can be accessed by the click of a button.
