Livejournal Colouring Tutorial

This tutorial gives you a rough idea on what kinda work goes into these icons. Different LJ makers will use different styles, and this is mine. Try out this one first, then experiment with different colours and effects when you're more confident. Feel free to use this tutorial and post your results, I'd love to see what you make. This is not a tutorial for a full LJ style icon, only the colouring.

Before starting you might want to put on some music. For me, it helps my creativy flow, and I like designing to a beat. Right now, I have some Jamiroquai playing.

Alright, firstly take your base image. Choose any stock you like. Remember if you re-size an image, it'll become blurry. So sharpen.

I'm using this.

Next, go to Layer > New Fill Layer > Solid Color, and add the following:-

Hex Code: F3E5CF, set to "Soft Light" with 55% opacity.
Hex Code: 614745, set to "Exclusion" with 55% opacity.

Then duplicate your base (Stock) layer, and set the duplicated image on "Overlay" with 100% opacity. Make sure this layer is above the others.

Duplicate the base image again, but this time put it on "Screen" with 90% opacity. Make sure this layer is above the others.

Duplicate once more (And again put the dulpicated layer on top of the other layers.). Now de-saturate (Turn the image black and white via CTRL+U). Set this layer on "Soft Light" at 50%.

Now add the following:

Solid Color, Hex Code: A32C2C on "Soft Light" at 20% opacity.
Solid Color, Hex Code: A32C2C on "Soft Light" at 20% opacity.
Gradient, Hex Codes: 3C739D and 3C69AC on "Vivid Light" at 60% opacity.
Solid Color, Hex Code: 0F2B4F on"Exclusion" at 100% opacity.

If you want to add text, place it below the 0F2B4F Exclusion, and above the 3C739D Vivid Light, for best results.

If you want to check your layers are arranged in the correct order, here's a screenshot of my workspace.

Congrats, your image is finished and fully coloured!

My Result.
