You know the people that say they've dissected pigs and lams; do they just bring a dead pig and lamb into the class?

... That would be a funny sight, walking down a corridor to their class with a dead pig/lamb in their hands. :P

I'd rather not spend my time dissecting an animal. I would much rather do it virtually. A group of friends and I are actually petitioning to either let people have a choice to do actual dissections or virtual, or to get rid of dissection...fully. Basically we are trying to make virtual dissection an option. I would really rather not dissect any animal, or human for that matter. I do not believe in cruelty of animals, and this is no exception. Especially the way some frogs, rats, etc. are treated before they end up on your table ready to be dissected. I would puke if I had to dissect any. If they try and say I have to do it, I will be walking out of the room. ^_^

I'm doing it in my second semester and I'm sure it'll be fine. I'm not really over-sensitive so slicing it open won't be any trouble.

I dissected a squid in eighth grade, and a fetal pig in high school. The pig was more interesting by far, since many of it's internal systems are similar to a human's.

To those of you who are opposed to dissection: How do you think we know so much about the human body and how we work? The whole practice of medicine would be bully without us knowing what is inside of us (and x-rays/MRIs only give us a glimpse). And what about forensics? Where would that be without dissection?

A squid? :o

I know that sometimes pig hearts are used in human heart transplants. You can actually see fat outside the heart. Its horrid.

I don't like the idea of killing animals for disection, but if there already dead, just consider it as an animal autopsy, I however don't quite have the stomach for it.

Yeah, we dissected squid on our class trip to Catalina island. It smelled atrocious, but it was still interesting :P

Yeah, killing animals for dissection has always been an issue, but I take the side of science. If we can learn something from our animal friends, or even humans, to cure ailments and afflictions, then I am all for it.

Someone in another Biology class brought in a dead raccoon for extra credit, if that counts for anything.

I dissected a cow eye last year, and a pig heart a few years ago at a science camp that I went to ( it was pretty lame... ). Quite fun. ^_^

They said at my school last year that if we didn't feel comfortable, then we could do a virtual one.
