I am creating a website for my school math club, and I want to ask couple of questions. Announcements Is there a some sort of announcement system on the main page, so multiple administrators can post up important announcements. Also, to those announcements, there has to be a comment system. Calendar I want to have a calendar system so members in the club can look at all the activities that are being done on different dates. If possible, I want to have a mini calendar on the side of each page, or list of upcoming events. Pictures I want to have a photo gallery with comment system, which is organized based on different events and year. So for example, I want the users easily be able to navigation through different competitions our club went to, and look at the pictures from there. Also, I was wondering how do you have a little system like where the picture is to big, you see the thumbnail. Then you click the picture, and a javascript (I think) based window pops up, for example, like the one on this site. http://www.sigsource.com/tutorials.php?act=full&id=62 Member Archives I want to have a list of members in the club, with a commenting and rating system. Its something similar to this, http://www.geocities.com/stonemandouglasmao/mathletes/, but the list of members in alphabetical order, and with information like year of graduation, and which subjects they are competing in. |

Using a content management system would probably allow annoucements. I am not sure of the calendar. Pictures there is a system that astheria uses on his site that is great for images. not sure about member archives |

Would be a nightmare to recode for comments. :S Easiest way to do a photogallery with comments is to post them as seperate blog entries, create a 'gallery' page with thumbnails that link to those blog pages that simply have the image posted so that commenting is automatically set up for it. I highly recommend textpattern if you're thinking of using a content management system. Pretty straightforward. |

I am still currently working on the template for the website. I am pretty sure that by tomorrow, I will be done and then all I have to do is start coding. http://img251.imageshack.us/img251/55/maotemplate2ny9.jpg Wordpress I thought is just for blogging. I am new to blogging and I read many stuff about it. But not really sure how it would work on my website. Textpattern, I looked at the website, and I don't really understand. Based on all your post above, I am guessing that Textpattern would only help me for the announcements system? What about the picture galllery, list of members in the club, etc? ALso, what about the calendar? |

Wordpress is not the be all end all blog software and I'm sick of people viewing it as that. It is nowhere near as customizable as other systems. It's for people who don't really care about building a website, just having a blog. And for him, it's not the answer. Commander, download Textpattern and install it, there's documentation on their website. Google search for php calendars there's bazillions of free scripts out there that are perfect for what you need. For the gallery, set up a thumbnail page like you would on a normal website, but instead of linking to the images with your <a> tag, link to a blog post that has the full size image posted there, so that users can comment on it. If this all sounds a tad over your head, just play around with textpattern and do some reading, what you're looking for overall is a tad advanced. |

Oh okay, cool thanks. But one more thing, what about the member archive? Member Archives I want to have a list of members in the club, with a commenting and rating system. If you do not want a blog, I don't know about the calendar, but I'm sure you can find it somewhere. As for the news/comments system, I use Cutenews. For the photo gallery, I would suggest Coppermine. Also, if you want a content management system, I would choose PHP-Nuke or e107. I hope this helps. If not, let me know. |

Not without a rather ridiculous amount of ajax. Stay simple when you're learning. You have to crawl before you can walk before you can run before you can fly. |
