Why is it so unlikely dragons ever existed?

Winged reptiles existed. Large reptiles existed. Why this urge to ridicule someone when they combine these facts and imply that at some point in time large winged reptiles may have existed? The archtypical "dragon" could have been based on these.

Stories about "dragons" have travelled by word of mouth for centuries, probably since prehistoric times. People tend to exaggerate, which would explain fire breath and other unlikely abilities attributed to dragons.

A particulary important and still contentious discovery is Archaeopteryx lithographica, found in the Jurassic Solnhofen Limestone of southern Germany, which is marked by rare but exceptionally well preserved fossils. Archaeopteryx is considered by many to be the first bird, being of about 150 million years of age. It is actually intermediate between the birds that we see flying around in our backyards and the predatory dinosaurs like Deinonychus. In fact, one skeleton of Archaeopteryx that had poorly preserved feathers was originally described as a skeleton of a small bipedal dinosaur,  Compsognathus. A total of seven specimens of the bird are known at this time.

It has long been accepted that Archaeopteryx was a transitional form between birds and reptiles, and that it is the earliest known bird. Lately, scientists have realized that it bears even more resemblance to its ancestors, the Maniraptora, than to modern birds; providing a strong phylogenetic link between the two groups. It is one of the most important fossils ever discovered.

Unlike all living birds, Archaeopteryx had a full set of teeth, a rather flat sternum ("breastbone"), a long, bony tail, gastralia ("belly ribs"), and three claws on the wing which could have still been used to grasp prey (or maybe trees). However, its feathers, wings, furcula ("wishbone") and reduced fingers are all characteristics of modern birds.

Make it a lot bigger and meaner and you get a dragon!

Of course there were no people around to notice it 150,000,000 years ago but it's the thought that counts. :P

I agree that at one point a dragon-resembling reptile may have once existed on earth, or back when there was only one large land mass.

Komodo Dragons are very large reptiles. They don't fly like the dragons in novels or films.

Who is to say that they didn't in the past? Surely the novels and films were based off something...

The novels and films are based off of folklore and the author/director's imagination.

What do you think the folklore was based off of?

Pshh, I have a pet dragon, they are real. Once you get over a million cool points you are awarded a baby dragon, it's been 3 years since I got mine and it's growing pretty fast.

Also, I too believe that there were ancient fat flying lizards that resembled dragons way back then.

Dinosaur bones. When people thousands of years ago found them, they didn't know what to think. Most ancient civilizations believed the Earth to be only thousands of years old, and would have had trouble understanding the concept of millions of years. They assumed that the dinosaur bones they found were from a creature that had existed within the past thousand years. Thus, they created dragon folklore to explain the dinosaur bones they found.
