Systematic chaos is 9 days away now, and I am pretty excited.

What are your favorite five tracks and three albums?

Pour moi:

Tracks:
1.Six Degrees Of Inner Turbulence(Live from Score)
2.Take the Time
3.Metropolis
4.Finally Free
5.The Great Debate

Albums:
1.SDOIT
2.Images and Words
3.Scenes from a memory

(In no particular order)

That was hard and they are all with LaBrie. But I probably should say, my favorite pre-LaBrie era song is 'Only a Matter Of Time'.

Anyone else here like a bit of Liquid Tension Experiment?

Hmm, Nice choices.

I haven't listen to that much of octavarium, I know, I'm a sinner.

I spent ages looking for The Ministry of Lost Souls in my music collection, I forgot it was off Systematic Chaos.

I am however sad theres no instrumental tracks on SC.

The Ministry of Lost Souls makes up for no instrumental tracks. The majority of the song is vocal-less. I usually dread instrumentals, honestly. There's only a few I like, and they're usually from these guys. Like, Hell's Kitchen or Overture 1928; I enjoy those very much.

Majority of Dream Theater fans (mainly older fans) don't enjoy Octavarium though. =[ I don't really care though, its one of my favorite albums by them. It's basically a huge nugget. You have to read the guide about it, there's a link on Wikipedia.

1. Overture 1928
2. 6:00
3. The Root of All Evil
4. These Walls
5. Stream of Consciousness

I just started listening to their new album this morning so we'll see how I feel. I'm with JP though, I really enjoyed Octavarium. Although I jumped on the Dream Theater train pretty late, I have their previous albums and like Octavarium the most :/

I just got into Dream Theater about two months ago, but I have at least 5 of their albums, along with the Live At Budokan. I'm still hoping to get a hold of everything they've ever made. :)

Songs:
1. Instrumedly
2. Octavarium
3. As I am
4, Stream of Consciousness
5. A Change of Seasons

Albums:
1. Train of Thought
2. Octavarium
3. Images and Words

There's only a few songs by them that I haven't really liked.

As I am Is a good song, i also really like Another Day.

Overture 1928 was a brilliant remix type of thing of the original Metropolis, it is brilliant listening to them one after the other.

Zeus, I wouldn't call myself one of the Old dream theater fans, but I generally like their older stuff.

Root of all evil was brilliant on the Score DVD, have a look at this if you haven't seen it before. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=9AfdicFlGGw

I did really like Score, but I felt they left out some of the classics, but I guess with so many songs, and mainly long ones, it must be hard to fit it in.

I wasn't saying newer fans don't enjoy their older albums. I plenty enjoy them as well, tracks such as Another Day or Lifting Shadows Off A Dream. I'm saying that their older fans (Images And Words, Awake, etc) don't enjoy Octavarium all that much, if not at all. Reason being is that the whole album sounds a lot like they were trying to cover other bands (I Walk Beside You sounding very U2-ish, and Never Enough sounding very Muse-like), and that ticked off some of their fan-base.

I thought it was a very interesting album, somewhat experimental for them, although they usually always are a bit experimental in their music. (Repentance on Systematic Chaos, <3) It can be seen as a sort of tribute-like album to their influences.
