This isn't so much a topic to chat as much as a light nudge to the skinning community. A few other people and I have noticed the lack of skins in the skin showcase compared to the amount of skin prints or maintitles in the graphics showcase. It strikes me that there's an imbalance in these figures. This could be for one of three reasons: 1. People are sketching out their skins and posting the prints in the graphics showcase to get feedback, then releasing them elsewhere. 2. People are focusing on improving the graphics side of their skinning ability, and neglecting the coding. 3. People can't be bothered to code it, so they do the 'fun' stuff only. It's entirely up to you what you do with your talents so feel free to completely ignore me - I'm not going to shove my opinions down anyone's throat! I simply think that this trend is a waste of talent. A skin print by itself is pointless. Fact. There are better things to stare at if you want to admire art, and you can't use a skin print to navigate around a board. I've commented recently in the staff room that the number of people with skinning talent near the top has dropped recently, and this is one of the possible explanations - there are people with talent, but they simply aren't sharing their thoughts and ideas with the community through a coded skin. I hope this isn't in some way the skin team's fault (having not released a skin in a while) but I hope the philosophy of prints over css is simply a phase and won't continue for much longer. Agree? Disagree? Found the cure for the common cold? Please post your thoughts on the matter. |

I completely agree. I think Skin Prints are ridiculous. I remember when skin previews were actually skins. I don't mind looking at Prints, but now everyone just posts prints and if they don't wanna code it, it gets thrown away or sold. Boring to me. |

I agree whole heartedly. People these days are creating skin templates in Photoshop and thinking they are absolutely amazing, and try to sell them. I doubt anyone realizes that a skin is worth nothing, unless coded. [ Besides, why would you sell an InvisionFree skin? ] Because let's face it, anyone can make a template. Anyone. However, not anyone can code it. I'm never quite impressed by templates, I look at them and think, so what? I've made many that were great in design quality, but I couldn't code them back then. And then there's the lot who make a skin template and call themselves skinners. You're not a skinner unless you, oh yeah, skin it. Skinning involves coding, and should be based around it as well. I have been having great trouble looking for possible new RA candidates, because no one seems to be skinning these days. It appears that the new trend is to have a group of designers and a group of coders, and if you can't find a good partner you cannot succeed. If you are good at designing, or good at coding, learn the other part. And that is the cure for the common cold. |

I don't like skin prints. It's just not the same without actually going on a test board and coding it. Graphics are essential to a skin, but the coding is more important. |

I'd have to agree with you on this ![]() The only reason I make a print is so I have a basic idea of what I am looking for when I code it. I never sell my prints because I think it is dumb. |

i agree too. I did that too, but when I was skinning I made so many templates and only sold a few of them... that would take too much time to skin all of them... It is also sad to see the # of skins being made DROP tremendously |

Coding isn't fun =p and I procrastinate a lot, but when I start coding something I get really into it, but basically I love designing a lot more. edit: also I am a fine coder and could code every skin I make in photoshop, when I do it the #1 thing on my mind is "is this possible" edit edit: I am also really stuck up, I hate most skins I see, yet the general IF seem to favor the skins that I hate over mine, and if people don't like my skins then I see no point in coding them when they can get some over contrasted nooby skin to satisfy their needs. |

I showcase skins. :S But yeah, I don't really have an opinion, considering I'm not sure I've even been here a whole month. |

Personally, I think it's a waste of time creating a template and not coding it. I created a lot of templates but I have to force myself into coding it because it's nothing but a piece of document sitting in my computer. Create a template and ask for people's opinion is alright but creating a template and do nothing with it is just plain useless. |

Heh, I thought this topic was going to be ignored for a while. ![]() I'm not saying that skin prints are a complete waste of time, for instance, you could be trying to get your graphic skills up, but I just feel that it might be leaving some individuals a bit down on coding knowledge. Then of course there's the main point that you can't use a skin print, which is what skinning is all about (in my opinion). |

I think that maybe it's because it's easier to do something extremely random for a template design, and then not have to code it. When in essence it might not actually be codeable. While you're designing and coding a skin at the same time you know what the contraints are. Otherwise you run off on one and end up with something that requires some modeification or something. While it's nice to think outside the box sometimes...I agree. I'd like to see skins rather than templates...and most definately not see "lolz template for sale $10!" in certain people's MSN Names. If you get stuck at coding that is what the skinning support forum is for...or my MSN if you regulary poke me for opinions/help (I'm not a fan of that..at least talk to me normally first (non of that 'sup' or 'whats up' crap...its weird and none of your business))Or maybe you're thinking it's a waste of time with ZB on the way...because I know that's why I've not coded any of my templates But at least I intend to code them
