Gap Years

I've just accepted a job offer for 12 months to work with a company. It was a final decision, but means I won't be going to Uni come September. I think I'm wise taking a year out as I want to build up some finance before setting my eyes on studying.

Has anyone else taken a gap year before entering Uni, or during years ... and what where their opinions?

I didn't but wish I had. Everyone I knew told me not to because it's so much harder to go back to school after a long break, which while perhaps true I still wish I had done. Now I'm in my 4th year of university most of the way to a degree that I really don't even want :/

I'm debating taking a year off. I can't exactly do it when I have a family.

I've decided against doing a gap year because if I were to do one I'd want it to be related to the subject I'm going to study at Uni (Engineering).
From the people I've spoken to I understand to it's better to do an engineering gap year mid way through the degree course. One because you'll get a better job placement than if you were to do one before you started the degree and secondly it gives you a chance to apply what you have so far learnt and it also gives you a focus for the remainder of the Uni Course.

I'm not old enough to take the "gap year" yet, but everyone I talked to that went back to school after said it was a bas decision. They couldn't get back into the hang of things and had a really hard time going back.

My teacher told me the same thing about taking an easy year in High School.

I’m not taking a gap year; I still haven’t decided whether to stay at college for another two years or to enrol in university though …

I thought the only difference was one was owned by a church or something.

If I don't get a good enough scholarship, I might have to take a gap year. Hopefully I'll get valedictorian though. ;)

This next year being my senior year, I'm going to try and relax a bit. I've got two tutorials and three classes that could be tutorials whenever I want them to be. I'll probably never have to take my homework home. XD

Edit: A college offers only a few degrees, normally in a certain field. An universities varies in the degrees it offers, ranging over several fields.

I'm not old enough, I've still got a few years of High school left.

I don't know if I'll take a gap year. I mean, if I get a job offer and they'll keep me on for a year full time and then move me to part time, and it's something I can do either in a different area, or long distance, then I'll probably take a gap year.

But yeah, if you build up a good financial base, that's good. Even better if you get a job in a place where you know you'll want to work after college. Because then you get back and you've got a degree and such, and you already know the company some.

I hear it is pretty hard to switch majors that far in. But, I won't be taking any gap years, I do plan on taking some college summer classes right after my senior year graduation. I guess I know what I want to do in life already.

It's pretty much a waste not to get my degree now, my only real option is I could double major in something else...if I knew what else I wanted to do.

I was sure all through highschool I wanted to do Anthropology (Archaeology specifically) and even for the first 2 years of college...then it just kind of disappeared. Not sure what happened :( I still love the subject, just not enough to be happy doing it day in and day out.

I think its a good idea, but most of the people I know who took one enjoyed it so much and never went back to Uni
