My biggest suggestion is that you should rarely ever make a curve in paint, it just doesn't look very smooth. The best looking paint pips are normally square, because it eliminates the choppy curves.

Not necessarily true, if you fade them into the bg with extra strokes along the outer edge, it can soften the edge.

Try adding gradients to them, make them stand out.
