Epiphone or Fender...; I'm a first time electric guitar buyer

Well I've been looking around for a good (and affordable) electric guitar for a couple of months now and I've narrowed my brand name options down. I'm 14 years old and am not going to be able to afford anything over 500 dollars. This will be my very first guitar so I will most likely need to find a good package deal that includes an amp and stuff. I'm interested in playing alternative related music, but if you want to get specific probably something more punk/ska related... I mainly do all my searching on MusiciansFriend. I would definitely like a gibson, but like I said before I don't really have any methods of making a lot of cash. So I've narrowed my options down to two name brands: Fender and Epiphone.

Right now I'm thinking Epiphone is the better way to go mainly because of there wide selection and the fact that they offer lots of there guitars in packs with other items like amps, cables, etc... If I were to narrow down my choice to a specific Epiphone it would probably be this one.

Fender offers some amazing electrics at affordable prices, but unfortunately most guitars they sell with amp packs are just some cheapies that don't have good quality. So Fender does have its downsides...

If you find a good store, you can get a guitar and an amp separately for under $500. (and a bag/case with some picks and extra strings).

Oh yea, and possibly you'd need to buy a cable for the amp; I'm not sure if they all come with that. The one I bought recently didn't. ^o)

For a first guitar, Fender is pretty good. I'd say Fender guitar and a Marshall amp if you don't know very much about it and want to start.

Yes, I'd say do that. I got a Fender Strat, cables, a case, a 15 watt Crate amp, and a tuner for under $700.

Well I'd say fender, because I have one and I am a beginner and its been great. I also have an acoustic 12 string Epiphone and its been great as well.

Completely agree. I started with a fender but instead of a marshall amp I bought a standard fender amp that came with the package.
Find a store that sells those Fender starter packs which includes:

- Guitar
- Standard Fender Amp
- Strap
- Extra Strings
- How to DVD

And whatnot. I bought one of those packs and I was pretty happy with it and the guitar is awesome and so is the amp. The pack costs around 150 euros. Not that expensive, in my opinion. In fact, I think it was pretty cheap considering I bought my Fender Bass pakcage for around 380 euros. I'm more into bass right now, though. :P

this is kind of off-topic, but if you're picking one of the ones in the link you gave, go for the vintage sunburst one.
