My schools will be having a talent show soon and me and some friends would like to enter it as a band. Playing a song like 'holiday' probably.. Or the sone 'but its better if you do'. But we are ameutars. I play electric guitar. My neighbor plays drums. And my cousen plays bass. But we are no here near as good to be playing one of those songs. Do any of you got an idea of how we can learn how to play 'holiday' or 'but its better if you do'? |

If your ameteurs chances are you dont have the gear to gig... or do you use your school's stuff? ![]() The best advice i could give you if you have difficulty learning anything is to slow it down to say.. half the tempo and learn it properly, but IN TIME.. then you can speed it up.. dont bother arranging a band practice and get everyone to learn whatever song on the day of the practice, thats never worked out for me. ..erm. good luck.

You guys are extremely lucky to have all the instruments you need (I was in a band before but our drummer left and now are looking for a new bassist and drummer) so you should take advantage of that. Just the chords or tabs for the song and practice a lot. Remember, you don't have to learn the song all at once. Good luck. ;P |

Aside from getting the actual music right my advice would be to work on the overall act. I'm part of the technical team for my school's shows we've done talent shows for a few years now. We often get a few bands entering and the musical ability often varies. We've had bands that musically are very able but have just stood there on the stage like cardboard cut outs, so although they sound great they're they're not particularly interesting. The bands that do well in the scoring are the bands that are not always great musicians but have played the audience well and shown some enthusiasm in what they're doing. On a side note, at last years talent show for one of the skits in between acts we used some pyrotechnics to produce a cannon blast type effect. During rehearsals we tested them for the first time and they were far louder than we'd anticipated. So loud that one of the receptionists from the front desk came running into the hall thinking a bomb had gone off.

Put a CD on and pretend to play the instruments. ![]() Seriously though, my best advice would of been to slow down the music, learn the it all, even the little bits that make the song, and then evtually speed it up. |

Learn to play it slowly. I also play electric guitar, and I'm quite into it. I've learned from experience that you should learn slow, and speed up later. It helps to reduce flaws. |
