So the Writers Guild of America officially went on strike today. This means that when popular TV shows run out of the scripts they have, they'll have to start showing re-runs until this gets resolved. This sucks because this means no more Heroes and all of the late night shows that I frequently watch. Hopefully this gets fixed quickly.

My question is, why did that happen?

Also, Jon Stewart is paying his and Colbert's writers personally so his show can go on.

No, they're still going on strike, he's just paying them so they have money coming in during the strike.

But yeah, re-run time. :(

Every three years, the Writers Guilds negotiate a new basic contract with the AMPTP by which its members are employed. In the 2007 negotiations over this contract, an impasse was reached and the WGA membership voted to give its board authorization to call a strike, which it did on Friday, November 2 with the strike beginning the subsequent Monday.

Among the many proposals from both sides regarding the new contract, there are several key issues of contention including DVD residuals, union jurisdiction over animation and reality programs, and perhaps most importantly, "new media".

The Directors' Guild of America is also planning a strike in 2008. It's a shame, really. As if they don't have enough money already. :(

Writers oddly enough don't make all that much from what I understand. I was reading an interview with one who was saying how worried he was about the length of the strike. The cost of living in that area isn't cheap, but if they want a job, they can't exactly pack up and leave. Some don't necessarily support the strike, but since they are in the union they are supporting their fellows.

Hopefully things will get resolved soon.

I really don't want too many shows to be affected by this.

It's going to be every American show that isn't a reality show... it's not like there are exceptions... at least I don't think so.

Well Heroes' writers were planning on cutting the season short anyway.

Apparently the writer's do not get residuals from DVD sales, which hasn't be re-negotiated since 1989. As much as I love to watch television, it doesn't seem fair to deny the writers their fair share of the money made by selling DVD's. :/

I hope the strike is resolved quickly and fairly.

I don't think it should be resolved until the writers can think of something original that has never been done before.

Do you realize that without the writers you're going to be watching re-runs until it's over? This means there will be re-runs of stuff that (according to you) wasn't original in the first place, and now we're seeing it again. So either way, it ending quickly would be great.

Also most original ideas are either scrapped or they don't succeed.. which is a sad thing. I don't really care about the strike to be honest, the only television I watch is sports and news in the morning and at night. But for the writers sake, I hope it is resolved.
