the worst that could really go wrong is you overwrite your windows and even that is pretty hard to do. Ubuntu does a pretty good job at keeping you away from bad situations.

GRUB, the bootloader Ubuntu uses, will detect Windows. If you want Windows as the default option in the bootloader, then install a package called "startupmanager" via Synaptic Package Manager and then choose Windows as the default option.

If you are worried about your hardware compatibility try asking at the Ubuntu Forums for more information.
